Katie - Mono
Another one from this shoot :- http://www.pixalo.com/community/phot...kit-22734.html
Converetd to Mono & some noise added to background , as I felt it was just too clean a black vs model. Softbox positioned high above camera facing down on model. Another softbox on the floor shooting up. C&C Welcome

Re: Katie - Mono
Great shot Dave
Two small suggestions: 1. A reflector would've controlled the shadow on her neck + the shadow under her nose, both of which I feel are a bit too strong. I know of the technique re: shadow under nose (can't think what it's called), but it looks a tiny bit too much here under the outside of her nostrils, where I feel it should be mainly under the tip of her nose. 2. Crop the small but noticeable dead space off the RHS (up to her shoulder)? I think it would match the tight crop on the LHS, and it's not like she's looking into that space, so to me it's extraneous. I like: 1. Model's pose, attire, hair, make-up, facial expression. 2. Lighting + exposure. 3. Compo + crop (bar minor crop suggested). 4. The sharpness of her eyes. 5. The mono treatment. 6. The BG including the noise ![]() Good work

Re: Katie - Mono
And just one teenie weenie thing.
There are two pearls on the string near the bottom that flared with light. I found that they drew my eye. Took me a while to figure what was catching my eye

The shiny patch on her forehead is catching my eye now.

Re: Katie - Mono
Although it would be easy to pick holes in the lighting (in terms of balance between top and bottom lights), I actually really like this picture! I have looked at it several times without posting because I wasn't sure which way I was going, but having just looked at it again I really really like it!
I agree about the necklace but that is easily fixed. I'd like to see... Dave, how about duplicating the layer, applying loads of Gaussian blur and changing blend mode of this blurred layer to Overlay (I think you guys refer to this as the 'orton' effect or something but I know it as black shadow printing from traditional darkroom printing. The method has been known long before 'orton' got to it!). This will smooth the skin tones, etc. Play with Opacity on the blurred layer. Just a thought to add to the 'mysterious' feel this image has for me. Nice one! (yet again! )Les |

The original is pin sharp showing every dimple / line on the skin. Maybe I need to take it a stage further

Re: Katie - Mono
I was tought to use the gaussian blur on a layer with just enough to smooth the edges, then add a little median blur where the noise filter is for the skin smoothing. I was told it would help the highlights on the skin smooth out better. These portrait shots are pretty well organized as for the lighting,,interesting stuff.

Re: Katie - Mono
Tx for your kind words Kris.
Re mouth this was positioning of lights, as Katie has great pout , which means no light was falling on her teeth .... possible downside

Re: Katie - Mono
Hi,
Never mind my comments. It was a lovely photo, and the positive points about this photo far outweigh the negative points. Life is a Great Journey of Education, and I am sure with enough focus on what we do every minute, every second, we will all be Masters of our trade. Thanks for a Great picture. Kris |
