Re: Lens distortion
This is where you could use photoshop to correct the vertical distortion of the buildings. There is also a tilt of the land to the left. Of course, straightening that makes the buildings tilt more. Hello, photoshop! It still corrects the vertical distortion.
Other than that, this is kindof a cool shot. There is a really nice contrast between the 4 buildings, and between them and the green space. skip |

Re: Lens distortion
After posting, I noticed just how tilted the buildings were. I looked and decided that the pointed glass at the top would be the best. I don't have much experience with this kind of distortion where everything is aligned differently. So thought I would ask everybody. Shooting wide angle is brand new for me.
Thanks skip for the reply

Re: Lens distortion
I'm guessing that you skewed and aligned the center or vice versa at the top and cropped. I guess I should have asked, with distorted pictures like this, just a straighten and leave the sides for the effect. I am using a 10-22mm and all my wide pic's are spread out somewhere on the ends. I like the effect, just don't understand the proper protocol,,thanks Graham the straight line man..

Re: Lens distortion
It was quite easy Boofers. I used the free transform tool.
First select the image (ctrl+A) then edit>free transform. This puts a bounding box around the image with handles in the corners and in the centre of the sides. Grab the top LH handle and also press the ctrl key. Now drag the corner out, keeping it level. When you see the effect you want, stop and do the same on the other top handle. Make sure the first one has not been distorted by doing the second one. If you are OK, just click on the tick in the bar at the top of the screen - job done. You could also use the filter>distort>lens correction filter to get a similar effect, but you might need to do some additional work to the image - either cloning in some areas that will be missing or cropping inside the distorted frame, or both.

Re: Lens distortion
This is like a new question,,,,"Ok, Selection tools", I see where the free transformation would work. "Is there a professional view on distorted pictures on how much distortion is relative to leave in?" Sorry, my communication skills are ripped. When I look at the picture, I want to leave in the slanted outter sides of the buildings, and or just align the top center point.
Did you mean that I would have to use the selection tools to adjust to my view of things, and it is ok on a professional level. Or is it one of those things like, if you change the picture in photoshop, there has to be a good reason for it? ![]() Sorry I gave the impression I didn't know how to use the selection tools, I can spin pictures. ![]()

Re: Lens distortion
I think the original picture was displaying perspective that was magnified by the wide angle lens. From your viewpoint looking up at the buildings it would be quite normal for the verticals to be converging to some extent.
The WA lens distortion is mostly confined to the edges of the frame where the verticals are at crazy angles as in my shots of York earlier in the year. When I corrected them it did occur to me that my result was not looking natural as the verticals ought to have been slightly converging. |

Re: Lens distortion
I remember some of your shots where you went into some real depth about angles. I will try to pay more attention to my first take. I was down on one knee for this and fired off +1 and -1 bracketted shots. My take is photomatrix lined it up fairly well because of all the lines, as it turned out, the lines are what blew me away,,converging is the word that explains what I see and I understand a little more about lenses and buildings,,
"you've done it again Graham", I feel good when I make way on what might seem small points. Thanks, Perspectively speaking
