Lisa, DXO &CS 6.

I recently upgraded to DXO Pro. 10 which is very good for separating highlights and shadows. I got these old studio shots taken some years ago they are some of the very first time I used a studio, taken in RAW. I processed these in DXO PRO 10 and then a few final tweaks in CS 6. I did not use Portrait Professional at all. I did use the spot healing brush to remove a few tiny blemishes for Graham's benefit.
I would like to have an honest critique of the pictures as on my previous processing they did not look nearly as good as these images. All comments good and bad welcome.
Colin.

Re: Lisa, DXO &CS 6.

Yes Colin

I'm not sure which of the many Graham's you were referring to, but ...

On the positive side the overall effect is quite balanced on each shot, but looking closer I (personally) find that there is a loss of tonal gradation. This could be entirely down to me, but skin tones are about the most difficult to reproduce. I guess that is why B&W is still so popular as you don't see the changes in colour along with the change in tone. What I'm alluding to is that there seem to be sharper changes than I would expect. This could have come from an older camera with a small pixel count, or lighting or the processing, or even the downsizing for upload here, so not directly a comment on the process itself. I think only a fair evaluation could be given if compared with your previous results. This is however nit picking some nice shots though.

There is only one blemish that shouts at me and that is in the corner of her left eye, mainly in #3 but also in #4. It's probably the lighting, but on my main monitor this is quite noticeable.

Re: Lisa, DXO &CS 6.

Thanks Graham for commenting. These were taken with a Canon EOS 20D 8mp camera. It was the first or second time I had used a studio and had no help with the lighting set up I am not sure what you mean by the tonal graduations as all are plain BG's, I thought the skin tones were fairly good, she did have a nice sun tan. I think you are right about the mark on the eye. Her makeup was not the best slightly greasy hence the shine in places.

Re: Lisa, DXO &CS 6.

Well I must admit I dont do much studio portraiture these days but when I did the lighting always belonged to the photographer and you had to know your stuff to use it properly, you should be completely in control of the lighting set up, not only is portraiture about recording whats in front of the camera its also about capturing a little bit about the subject matter, backgrounds are also very important too often a good backcloth will make a good portrait, now getting back to your selection I rather like the first shot, but all the pictures that you have produced are rather nice and I am sure that the young lady will be well pleased with any of these picture's.....well done.

Re: Lisa, DXO &CS 6.

Thanks Des. you are my sole contributor glad you liked them. The reason I posted was that this was about the first time I had used a studio and knew nothing about lighting [This still applies ] but the difference here is the DXO was able to give a better separation of the BG and also gives a good skin tone without having to use Portrait Professional which can give an artificial plastic tone . Was just checking and these were taken ten years ago, must be getting old. Thanks again.

Re: Lisa, DXO &CS 6.

I'll be referring to "left hand" etc. in these comments. By left hand, I mean the model's left hand, which is on the right of the picture. I'm being brief in these comments.

No 1.
Skin tones on face unflattering; pendant earrings unbalanced, left hand has strange growth near wrist (probably clothing edge) and an extra finger (probably foot).

No 2.
Catch lights on earrings catch my attention more than anything else; would prefer not to have arm/hand outline continued so exactly by the dress; leg position gives appearance of a single leg just below dress; would prefer to see full head outline; seems almost a contradiction between black background and lighting on model.

No 3.
Model's right hand; hot spot on hair at top of head; legs (model's and chair's - chair has 1 leg that reaches the ground and two that don't); model has half a leg, rest fade away - fine if lower half of image fades but chair doesn't).

No 4.
Confusion of right hand and hair; not certain about way tattoo is being pointed out.

Re: Lisa, DXO &CS 6.

Stephen, Thanks for detailed comments.
No. 1 Head is on tilt so earrings would not be balanced. About the hand she was bare footed I think a bit of the foot has combined with the hand, had not noticed this. Skin tones look ok to me she is very sun tanned.

No. 2 Agree about the catch lights. not sure what you mean about the contradiction about the BG .

NO. 3. Both legs show on my screen.

No. 4 Not sure what you mean about confusion on right hand and hair. I agree fingers would be better closed together.

Re: Lisa, DXO &CS 6.

With 4 photos, comments (from me) will be terse. Just picking up on two of the points where you said I wasn't clear (but I'll stand by my comments on 1 and 3).

No 2.
Model well lit but background (even at the feet) totally black. I would expect some (even if small) detail visible.

No 4.
The hair creates an obvious ugly scar on the side of the hand wrist. It's obviously a scar because the bracelet goes round it. The hair and skin are the same colour...
