Re: Loch Alsh
Don't really like it, sorry. Composition is not great, half the cannon is cut off left and bottom, never mind it being in shadow, and from the quality of the scan it is hard to tell what the details look like. Sorry.

Re: Loch Alsh
At first sight a great picture, I could find fault, but why ,you can see them your self,a photograph cannot be judged on technical perfection alone.on rerlection i still find this a very attractive view.
It takes me back about ten years when i did a bicycle ride from lands end to john o groats, this was my first visit to Scotland, your picture is typical of the scenary i fell in love with. Last edited by Foxesbrew : 19-01-2007 at 10:02. |

Re: Loch Alsh
Critique of a photograph is not only about the technical merits or deficiencies of a picture but also about the final result, the effect it has on the viewer as a picture. photographers are a small percentage of the general population and we look at things often in a somewhat fixed manner. We are almost conditioned to think 'Crop, exposure, depth of field...' but the vast majority of people look at it as an image and their decision is based on 'Do i like this or not?' I think it is important on here that we try and do both, not just one thing or the other.
Yes, there are a couple of technical faults here, I would prefer the image to have been taken from a lower viewpoint, right down near ground level to give more impact. But do i like the image as a picture? yes i do. It has interest both in the foreground, middle ground and background, the colours are good and it records a very presentable impression of the scene. it isn't a scan so that doesn't come into it. Any lost detail is a combination of an older camera and the compression so that is fair enough. it is an enjoyable picture so well done fi ![]() Rob

Re: Loch Alsh
Hmm, well, technically it's not helped by being 750 x 450 and only 30k! Hence the poor quality issues. Compression is the answer but never should be a problem, given the sizes you can use here. Very, very occasionally I get compression probs with a highly detailed wide angle shot
Compositionally it's not that interesting (and you won't get lower with that wall!) and the light's not helping, casting the bulk of the gun in darkness. Do I like it? Can't say as I do - especially as I know that you can do much better (OK, this was taken a couple of years ago - so why show it?)

Re: Loch Alsh
okies thanx all........
first gonna answer mark's why show it.. a number of reasons......... i like it and wanted to see what other people thought about it....... I wanted to hear/read why folks didint like it and why folks did so i could maybe see why i liked it? also as far as critique everyone here should know by now i dont mind if my pics get ripped to shreds. but the pictures as far as I am concerned as posted here for critique NOT ust for the photographer, but in the hope that the answers can help others as well. I do not believe we should just put our BEST up here. what would be the point? no its not a scan and maybe i should have resized it but it had been down to this size for another site ages ago and the original is on a disk somewhere so i just used this one. the point of this image was to try to convey a little of where i was and where i was looking out to.........and this i think i acheived with the limited ( or no ) knowledge i had of photography at the time. anyway thanx again for ALL the comments. as always its appreciated that folks take the time to look and comment. Re: Loch Alsh
I have put pictures up that were taken a year ago and in a couple of cases several! I don't see why that should be an issue at all. the comments made are just as relevant and therefore just as helpful.

Re: Loch Alsh
Please take what you are about to read as a personal opinion only and not one of the Pixalo Crew as a whole.
I believe that in the critique section we should be very open to criticism as well as praise. You can’t expect one without being able to handle the other. I always remember that when offering an opinion on a shot and try to point out both what I like and what I dislike from both a technical and a personal point of view. If this forum became just like the photo sharing section it would no longer have a purpose IMO. Should you show only your best work here? For me I would not show anything other than what I consider my best work in this section unless there was a picture that I just couldn’t understand or work the way I wanted. I would then post that here for your opinions but include some text to express my reservations and issues with the shot to hopefully help you guys help me. Why would I not show other photos that I don’t consider my best, quite simply because if I know it not to be my best work, I also know why its not and thus it removes the need for critique. I personally want to improve not look at my skill level from 12-18 months ago, but hey…that’s just me and you can use this section however you wish. To the picture…as Markulous has said it’s a tiny file size for its dimensions and as a result the quality we are viewing it at doesn’t allow for serious assessment of the focus, details and exposure leaving us only with the composition to comment on. In that and with the greatest respect Fiona, you, I and just about every other member on the forums knows that you are now miles ahead in terms of skill from when this shot was taken. The faults have already been highlighted but I would bet that you knew about them before any comments were posted ![]()

Re: Loch Alsh
This picture just gives me a good feeling. Even though the cannon is shadowy and slightly incomplete, it seems to be pointing at the background hills, directing the eye there. I like that. There is this old dead instrument of war, overseeing the serene scene. The contrast in feeling here is what makes the image interesting in my view.
And your clouds really add to the intensity. Good early job, Fi. See, even then there was a spark ![]() skip |
