March Ladybird
Hi
Out in my garden the other day and was surprised to see dozens of ladybirds amongst the Rosemary. Can't remember seeing them in March in Cumbria before, think I might have spotted them amongst the snow. Any thoughts on how to improve the picture? I used my newly acquired Sonia close up kit macro lens on the front of the fuji S602. The pic has had the levels tweaked, and USM in Lab mode, followed by a small crop. ![]() TFL Allan Last edited by Keltic Ice Man : 31-03-2006 at 00:22. |

Ah......the S602, wonderful camera.
Any way - back to topic. A good shot, good bokeh in the background but if anything I would have taken a much tighter crop. Thanks for showing. regards |

This is a noble attempt but there a few things that could be improved. The focus is half way down the body of the ladybird instead on being on the head, sometimes you can get away with it being ever so slightly off but with this be macro and the DOF being tiny it means the focal point becomes vital. The background is also quite busy and distracting; the stalk level with the ladybird on the right is fighting for attention and generally winning due to it running along the focal plain and thus more of it being in focus. That needs cloning out completely or blurring extensively to help blend it in and add focus to the main subject. Alternatively/also isolating the ladybird and applying blur to the rest of the picture would help too.
Considering the equipment you have used you have not done too badly, but you could have moved the stalk out of frame before the shot to make it cleaner and it is vital to get the focus spot on with the main subject. I would consider this shot a great one from learning from and I am sure that your next attempt will be much improved. Hope that helps Allen and is the sort of feedback you expected from the critique forum. ![]()

Thanks for the feedback - thats exactly the sort of feedback and help I'm after Steve. I could see it wasn't quite right but wasn't sure what to change (next time i see a ladybird).
Any other C&C much appreciated Allan |
