Matrix MX (I've been fiddling again)

Fresh out of photoshop last night.

I was going for a kinda "bullet time" effect as seen in the Matrix films with this one.
I wanted to write the steps I took to acheive to create this pic untill I realised just how many there were

So heres the short version...

I cut the rider out of the sky then cloned the missing sky behind the rider.
Then I cut the rear wheel of the back of the bike and placed it back into the sky.
The final chop removed the sky from the land.
Next I applied a water ripple filter (available for free from adobe exchange) to the background layers leaving the front of the bike and rider untouched.
Finaly I used a highly feathered eliptical marquee to select the inner circles of the ripple and aplied a splater filter. I then reduced the opacity to make it blend in with the sky.

Simple

Any sugestions, ideas would be appreciated

Total editing time - 3hrs.
Number of layers used - 11.
PSD document size - 76MB.
Coffe consumed & cigarets smoked - lost count

Three hours My average time for editing a shot is about three minutes. You certainly have patience It's a different way of presenting this type of shot although I'm not sure what you've done with the back wheel? I'm always interested in different effects - thanks for showing.

I was trying to make it look like the rider was bursting out through a transparent liquid type layer causing the ripples as it passed. The back wheel is still behind this layer thus distorted to the eye.
The area round the back wheel was actualy the most difficult bit to get right, requiring four layers.

Here's a jpeg showing the different layers for the back wheel.

It's different but I'm not sure that it really works to be honest NIck. You're trying to give it a 3D feel but it's still looking 2D.

I've seen a few guys taking the front wheel "out of the frame" so to speak. That might be another option

Oh, you set up for the beach race Won't make it but putting it into next years diary

Just finished printing the last of my adds for the Beach Race tomorrow (YIPPIE). Got a call this morning saying the beach has no sand on it due to the wind direction over the last week. We had spent all day setting up the track (4miles of it) last Sunday. So the track had to be shifted half a mile up the road to Norton (a sand track that we race on during the year).
I also had the Orkney Collage's graduation ceromony to cover this afternoon so its been a busy day

Sign in is at 11am tomorrow for conventual racing at Heddle Hill.
Sign in is at 10am on Sunday for the Beach Race.
Then I have the dance to cover on Sunday night.
Its gona be a long weekend but should be worth it

Cheers for being honest dod, I knew somthing wasn't quite right with this edit. I think you've hit the nail on the head with the problem.
Got some ideas in my head of how to fix the problem now. When I get the time I'll give them a go.

Re: Matrix MX (I've been fiddling again)

One thought that might help, when applying the filter effect to the back wheel, apply a graduated layer mask so that it applies strongly to the point nearest the background riple and graduates to the wheel being clear as it comes forward. This would give it a greater 3D appeal I think.

Always good to give things a try so good on you for having a go :o)

Cheers,
Rob
