Re: Mighty Greek Ship

Impressive silhouette, with the light on the water keeping a 3D feel to the shot. I would have said crop a little from the top, but that would spoil the effect of the fading glow from the setting sun.

Beautiful shot! The crops a touch tight on the bottom for my liking though.

Re: Mighty Greek Ship

This is a lovely shot

Whilst the ship does provide some nice shapes at the top of it to make a good silhouette, the amount of solid black is a little too much IMHO, and I'd like to see just a hint of detail in the ship's hull.

I like the crop, the ship has plenty of room to 'move' into. I would, however, be inclined to remove the streak of highlight that runs across + just above the top of the ship.

I like your viewpoint, which gives us a good idea of the size of the approaching ship, but I do feel that the full impact of this is a little lost because the solid black mass of the ship shows no form, i.e. it comes across as a purely two-dimensional shape, rather than a three-dimensional entity. If it had a bit of detail (just a slight variation in tones, mind), i.e. showed the 3rd dimension of coming towards the viewer, then I think it would be a stunning shot.

Re: Mighty Greek Ship

I don't know. The shot doesn't do a lot for me. The vapour trail from the plane is distracting and there's too much dark area. The sky is nice but I'm left wondering what I'd use this photo for. Maybe cropping tighter would help. I'm going to try that.

Re: Mighty Greek Ship

I agree, the composition is very good, but the dark area is a bit over-powering. The sky is lovely, shame about the contrail which is sadly inevitable in the skies most of the time these days. I think this would need a bracketed exposure to get the balance between the lovely sun and silhouette and the hull of the ship. I'd like to see just enough to see the line between ship and water in the FG area.

But all that might sound like I don't like the overall picture which would be wrong, I do.

Cheers,
Rob
