Took this shot last night on my way home from getting some firewood from the beach, I was trying to capture the movement of the Ocean around the rocks and I think if the shot was taken from a higher view point it would have shown more water and would have looked better(my tripod wouldn't go any higher) shot settings are: ISO 100 40mm F9 30sec still trying to learn the best ways of converting mono images-any thoughts/comments are welcome

Re: Mono Coastline
good seascape but if you want to capture movement you are going to have to have a much quicker ss than 30secs. TO capture movement I normally start at 1 sec. If it was very dark you would have probably had to open up more and push the iso up - something I am not normally keen on for landscapes. Having said that I like this shot and think you had the right settings for the conditions - but you got a milky look and not the movement look

Re: Mono Coastline
Thanks b.van_der_dylan you are right, there is no movement there at all its very milky-was thinking this might happen as it was very dark(my camera was having probs trying to focus ) i think the same shot taken earlier with more light available and a faster shutter speed would have looked better with crashing waves on the rocks....will try this shot again sometime

Re: Mono Coastline
It's an interesting and unusual result (and all the better for it!). I'm not a great supporter of 'milky' water because it often contains no detail but you've got a mist around the well defined rocks whilst retaining a sparkle in the water. Maybe no crashing waves but I really like the result - especially as you've controlled the exposure so as to prevent the rocks on RHS going into deep shadow

Re: Mono Coastline
I like it. Crashing waves are so passé! There's more atmosphere here than there would have been had it been captured with a faster shutter speed, and I like the mono conversion.

Re: Mono Coastline
I like the effect you have got here too. It is more atmospheric than if there was more detail in the water.
There is a bit of a halo along the edge of the main rocks on the RHS, but otherwise it is a really good conversion I think there is another picture there by cropping just above the rocks on the sand. A minor point is I think the drop shadow is too close to the edge of the canvas. |

Re: Mono Coastline
Thanks Frog and Dabhand-does give it a certain mystic type of feel with the way the Ocean has been recorded, i tried i little dodging and burning on the rocks an clouds i think that halo is from the type of brush i was using where i overlapped?, the drop shadow frame was a photoshop action i downloaded-try as i might i cant seem to find a action for a simple slim frame to use on most photos?
what do others do?

Re: Mono Coastline
I've written some tutorials on this subject. I've not bothered to make them into actions as when you get used to them they can be done very quickly, and also some of the settings can then be tailored to suit the individual image. I often sample colours from the image to include in the border too so actions can't give the flexibility I want, although I concede they are best to do multiple identical actions.
Paint Shop Pro X Photoshop And one for drop shadows in PS here. |

Re: Mono Coastline
Usually, a simple black 4 px canvas edit - just enough to seperate the image from the web page surround. I've tried various and in the end return to one that doesn't detract from the pic, doesn't clash with the page colouring yet does stop the image 'bleeding' into the rest of the page!

Re: Mono Coastline
Cheers Mark/Dabhand ive been reading the tutorials-got a few things to try now, i also like the simple approach with a very thin black boarder just enough to add separation but was unsure how it was done-easy when you know how...
