Mono portrait

Perhaps this should have gone in sharing, cos I know exactly what's wrong with it, but I also like it.
This was natural light (as it were) from a low wattage room lamp. ISO6400, no NR; a good test for the D300. Mono so as to minimise the prevalence of the noise.
Even though his face is too dark, I still think the pic has something about it, and would be interested in hearing your thoughts.

Re: Mono portrait

Jack,I'm no portrait shooter, and it may well be my monitor, but there are a couple of small areas of total black on the face/neck.Now actually,I can live with that because they are small and I can see the eye. It's a great result for 6400.

Re: Mono portrait

It does have something about it Jack. For me it's the expression and how he's engaging with you as the photographer. The highlights don't look blown on my monitor, so really, just a reflector to bounce a bit of light back would have worked well here.

Re: Mono portrait

dark side looks a little too dark ( could be my monitor ) so I'd go with some light dodge work here. having said that I really like it , it does have something about it
