Mother & Son

Does this angle work? If not can it be saved? Its my wife and 6 week old son - I have lots more from this shoot with more natural angles but I just can't decide if I like this one or not.

Re: Mother & Son

have to say that i dont particularly think it works, your wife looks like she is going to wake up with a crick in her neck the way she is holding it! its not natural or comfotable looking. and i would liked to have seen the complete hand behind the babys head as it looks a bit strange with just fingers appearing out of no where.

Re: Mother & Son

My first impression was "not really". Your wife looks as if she is falling backwards with nothing to support her. I thing it should be much more upright.

Other than that it looks a good picture but I am no expert on portraits. I am sure others will comment as well.

Re: Mother & Son

I'd like to compare it with the original orientation - presuming your Wife does not usually defy gravity! I'm also not sure about the back of the baby's head being cropped. That might have worked without the fingers.

Exposure and lighting looks fine

Re: Mother & Son

Well I think you have captured a wonderful moment & the light creates a nice mood to the shot. I think you have such a strong diagonal between the eyes if you keep the portrait more upright like this :-

Excuse any dodgy cloning, as I was missing some of the shot once I rotated it

I think the original angle would have worked if just your wife & with some eye contact, but with the 2 of them you keep getting your drawn to a different angle of the view between mother & baby. Well that's my thought anyway

Think that Dave's edit, albeit creating more of a classic pose, works much better

Fabulous portrait, which works much better with Dave's rotated crop (but avoid his dodgy cloning )

Re: Mother & Son

I love both versions to be honest, they capture a beautiful mother and baby moment and without reading the comments about the first one I didn't feel in the slightest put off by the angle in the first one.

I DO prefer Dave's version but I'd be more than happy with either on my wall if this was my wife and child so well done Mike, a lovely poignant moment captured forever

Cheers,
Rob
