This is a shot taken by my daughter. I was on strike, she was out of school...so we had an afternoon out together. The pay off for me trekking around the stores after her, was that she came with me to take photos. This is only one of hers, and I think she has a great 'eye' - comments welcome

Nellie, technically - exposure, focus, Dof, colours - it's very good

Composition looks like an accidental discharge (the camera went off by mistake). Question: What was the reason for taking this shot? What does it mean/say to you? TBH it doesn't mean or say much to me, except that someone wearing boots + jeans is sitting down on some stones + probably sporting an aching bottom

Point being, the subject matter is, shall we say, mundane, and it would take a very creative approach to make a shot like this work.

Sorry if my comment sounds harsh, I mean it in a helpful way

EDIT: Ok I've commented as if you took the shot. I have no idea how old your daughter is or how much experience she has had with photography.

I agree, technically, it is very good! I was really pleased for her - it wasn't an accidental shot, and if you think this is weird, you should see her GCSE art work!

It's an interesting line to take, and I can seeing it having a good ending, but....
I think, like Charlotte said, this looks like an accidental shot. I know it isn't, and I can see the idea here, but it would have been better - IMO - to have got some like-coloured rocks and put them near the shoe, then gone up close and demonstrated an artistic relationship between the raw nature of the rocks and the manufactured sensibility of the shoe.
Your daughter should know how to bulls**t like that, seeing as she's doing GCSE art

That's why I maintain that having 'the eye' isn't everything in photography.

By the size of the shoe I would think she's at the age of "shoe fascination", from the artist's view, she's making a statement with the rocks and the many colors. Outstanding shot that must be admired with the young at heart.

Aww Jack - you weren't being really mean _ I think an artistic relationship was the furthest from her mind - they were just good , complimentary,colours!. I gave it the title - as they were my 'strike boots'.
As an abstract - I like it without having to import meaning per se - and I am still chuffed with her technical ability
Thanks for your comments - I would really welcome more of your critiques - she is better than me (sniff), but objective criticism is the only way forward!

My daughter finished her art / education degree last year. To quote here "if the artist says it is art then it is art"

If you think GCSE is weird just wait until she get to uni

I'd love her to take her art and some of her (MORE!) quirky photography to uni, but she's 'not sure' - she takes photographs of people in umm, challenging situations, and then paints the image, blending it with other media.
I'm sure there had to be a good reason for tying her best mate to a chair (complete with blindfold), and reproducing it for the final art piece, but I prefer to 'remember' my daughter as a pudgy toddler with owl spectacles and a sensible bobbed hairstyle...

Just tell your daughter who ever said that "school days are the best days of your life" was fibbing and had never been to university. Mind you I speak from a time when we had grants and students were seen as an investment in the future not another source of revenue.

Her idea of tying that firend to a chair is brilliant. She will do well at a good uni. It will give her the chance to develop her art in ways she has never dreamed about.

I'm sure she would. But she tells me thats a mam talking. And I had to promise not to publish any more of her pics! sorry -thank you whistle2:s for your comments - I remain admonished
