My favourite from the trip to France

This shot was taken at around half seven in the morning. We had set off early as our destination was quite a distance from where we were staying and along the way as the sun rose we were treated to this spectacular scene.

I quickly set up my gear, tripod, Canon 20D, 17-40L, circular polarizer and graduated filters. Using Mirror lockup, remote shutter release and careful metering this is the shot exactly as it came out. The only processing I have done is to reduce the size for web viewing, apply a small amount of sharpening to compensate for its small size and then add the frame.

The large version really does look impressive and it is probably my favourite shot from my recent break to the Provence. I hope you like it as much as I do.

Re: My favourite from the trip to France

It is a very nicely captured shot, and i bet it saves you hours of post processing by taking decent meterings and adding the grads in camera!
A nice dreamy/moody landscape
If you were to work on it i would probably just clone out the building that runs out of frame in the bottom right hand corner, but just being picky really!

Re: My favourite from the trip to France

Great shot, misty landscapes can so often look grey and dull when potographed, rather than romantic. The light you've caught here has prevented that and made a really atmospheric image.

Re: My favourite from the trip to France

I've been waiting untill I got home to see this on a half decent monitor before commenting

I really like the composition, the mountains emerging from the low-level cloud in the background look great, with the whole scene just looking very peacefull... great shot!

Re: My favourite from the trip to France

Stunning image. You have conveyed the feeling of early morning peacefulness perfectly. Yet the diagonal lines of the hills add a dynamic feeling to it. Your composition is great, and the image has wonderful depth.

We can all aspire to getting in right in camera, like this.

Re: My favourite from the trip to France

Thanks for all the comments folks, I am glad that in general this one was well recieved

I also have another shot of the same scene taken with a telephoto. Just the light breaking through the clouds and lighting up the valley, its not as powerful a shot as this but I may dig it out for you to comment on

Re: My favourite from the trip to France

I do prefer the wider view, but as a shot on it's own it's still very good. The atmosphere is still there, and the angles created by the terrain are composed nicely. Presumably the colour gradation is better on the bigger one, as it has banded slightly on my monitor.

Re: My favourite from the trip to France

This isn't an attempt to improve the earlier shot as I love it. Just thought I'd see what this looks like as a bit of fun. The light coming through was so gorgeous and that building looks like a church so it looks like the heavens are shining on it :o)

Hope you don't mind be being a bit cheeky Steve.

Cheers,
Rob

Re: My favourite from the trip to France

I meant to add, the reason I went for something different is I couldn't improve on what was there! I love the shot and I bet it looks great printed out bigger. I definitely get more from this one than from the telephoto shot as that doesn't have much space for the eye to explore whereas the first one does.

Cheers,
Rob
