Re: necropolis
I like the idea, the grainy/noisy effect works well, the toning adds to the ageing so all of that is fine. I am not keen on the composition, I think I would have gone portrait for this building but if not, to leave plenty of room around it at both top and bottom. The thing I personally don't like is the semi vignette edge with a solid stroke line around it. I would go for one or the other, not both. I would choose the stroke and lose the vignette but that is just my personal taste on this particular shot, it's just a bit too broad a band of vignetting and is causing the necropolis to be squeezed even more into this space. The needle is standing out nicely against the tree but the top is disappearing into the sky because of f the texture matching the grain.
The image feels a bit too heavy, maybe because of the strength of the tone so you could perhaps lighten it a touch and gain a bit more dynamic range. I know you want an old look so maybe you want a faded look too but I do think the greater range would look better. Good ideas employed here Fi, the effect is what you were trying to achieve so that must be considered a success. I will be interested to see what others think. Cheers, Rob

Re: necropolis
I think your processing etc has certainly given an 'aged' look to the image,

Re: necropolis
Hi Fi
I dunno. To me it doesn't look aged, just photoshopped. That may just be my bias though. The vignetting doesn't do anything for me. There have to be other filters etc. in ps to create the effect that you want. I just don't have any knowledge in this area though. Sorry. skip |

Re: necropolis
One thing I noticed that detracted from the aged look was the contrast between the "old" looking picture and the more "modern" looking drop shadow frame you added...
I did a quick crop and added a simple thin black outline frame to see if it made any difference - ![]() |

Re: necropolis
I like the idea but I agree with Iain, the new border and "Copyright 2007" are a little incongrous.
I thought I'd have a bit of fun with it, hope you don't mind ... ![]() I used a scan of an old photo that I've been restoring for someone for the border Pasted in your image Then either cloned in from the scane or drew (with dodge and burn) the wrinkles and damage Should have done something about the white surround but I have to go out so no time. Cheers Dan

Re: necropolis
ROFL, exactly as Fiona said, I get paid good money to take photos like that and restore them!
Brilliant bit of work though Dan, utterly convincing and as aged as it is ever going to get. Cheers, Rob |
