Re: not a castle.or a church.. but.............
Nothing to dislike in this one Fi, but in your usual dark & moody style, the processing has lost just a touch of detail in the building and walls, and the grass bank to the RHS of the building. Being picky the tree on the LHS might have been better to be totally in (unless there was something you wanted to omit from the picture). Is that a bird above the central tree? I'd get rid of it, and also the tree peeping over the top of the main building on the RHS.
As always, an image to savour

Hi Fi
On my screen it is too dark. Not enought tonal range. And a foundry probably doesn't deserve the dark and moody treatment. Oh, and I agree with Grahams nitpicking remarks. After all, the devil is in the details.skip |

Re: not a castle.or a church.. but.............
this was a hard one to call.......... i loved the shape of the tree on the left... but i also wanted to keep the pyramid shaped thing on the right. i was as far back as I could get without falling down! lol.......... didint notice the bird graham! funny how some things that are obvious we completely miss. and didint even think about the tree. now u point it out it would definately give the roof a cleaner line.......
Skip, i tried to keep this lighter!!! honest, and its not nearly as dark as some of my shots..... lol im trying to "lighten up" in my old age. hehe Fi |

Looks good to me, dark, but not too dark as I can see some detail in the stonework. I thinkdark suits the subject as I imagine an old iron foundry woud be dark & dirty.
I would clone out the bird. |

Re: not a castle.or a church.. but.............
I like this Fiona, it is gritty and dark just like a foundry was when you had to slog your guts out working in one!
There are some useful hints and tips for exactly this kind of shot in this month's Practical Photography. There is a neat little book on black and white processing, well worth a look. Cheers, Rob |

Re: not a castle.or a church.. but.............
Looks good against that sky - and I'll add my vote to not looking too dark!
![]() And I'd have been tempted to get more of that sky at the expense of some of the uninteresting grass FG (maybe even taking the shot from ground level?). TBH, the tree wins vs the triangular shaped structure - contrasting form (and it would've moved the forge a little further to the right) |

Fi, don't worry if you don't want to fork out for it. I don't need the little book (interesting as it is, I have read it through) so just shout if you want it and I'll pop it in the post for you.
Cheers, Rob |
