Old Mill Falls

Near the St Lawrence ... again. Abandoned a long time ago; the mill is just to the right of the falls, which I will post later due to the restrictions of one pic per session.
Cheers to all.

Re: Old Mill Falls

Nice, classic comp but detail looks burned at the top of the 'falls and image could do with a touch more saturation

Re: Old Mill Falls

I agree with Mark. Nice diagonal formed by the falls, but top section is burnt out. In spite of the blue sky, it looks like the sort of picture you would get on an overcast day.

Re: Old Mill Falls

I like the lower half of the photo. I would concentrate on that part.

Re: Old Mill Falls

I agree with Mary, the top half lacks detail and is a bit busy, the bottom half is a picture in itself. Even if you keep the top half, I would definitely crop off the blue sky area as that is fighting with the diagonal of the waterfall. Shift the picture up screen so you just crop that bit off and you'll see what I mean: it immediately looks more balanced because you have not got a horizontal at top fighting with the diagonal.

Cheers,
Rob

I love it when someone agrees with me .

Especially you Rob because I'm trying to learn from you and it makes me feel like I may be heading in the right direction.

Re: Old Mill Falls

Thanks to all ... and you are all right.
I did moce the pic up the screen a little, to crop the blue horizontal and it does make a huge difference indeed.
As for the suggestion for saturation, how much and what hues would you work on? The whole or part of it only?
Her is a trial, edited version ... is this any better?

Re: Old Mill Falls

I like this better, but I would still cut off the top falls. My eyes get stuck on the top part of the waterfalls which I don't think is the best feature of this photo. The lower part has more dimension, texture and the flow is so much better.

But I will leave it to the editing experts

Re: Old Mill Falls

But you don't have to leave it to the editing experts, Dogdots!
In fact, you are absolutely right; the lowest half has better flow and dimension.
I cropped it again and saved it for further use. Thanks for the hints.
There is another pic of the same falls, but with part of the bottom wall of the mill near the very end of the falls; it does look good too.
I will not post again the same pics though; I had very good critiques from all of you and that is very much appreciated!
Went out today ... minus 7C and, after last day snowstorm (30 cm!!) the blues of the mountains and the river against all that white is spendid. I took some pics, of course, which I will post ... as long as they are worth showing.
Great weekend to all.
