Old slipway
tear it to bits guys, I'm not sure what's wrong with it, but I'm not happy with it for some reason and I can't see it

Try warming it up a bit? It looks as though the colour balance is over towards the blue? Other than that, I think it's just that the very dark foreground dominates the rest of the shot which looks washed out in comparison. I'm sure there's a good shot struggling to get out though. I might have a play in a minute.

I rather like that, the blown highlights on the clouds distract a little though. Maybe a graduated filter would have helped there?
The slipway certainly leads the eye into the shot. I'd be happy if that was on my card. |

Any better?
I shifted the colour balance warmer for the whole shot then selectively darkened everything above the far water's edge.![]() |

the foregrounds a lot better, contrasts better throughout
I'm starting to think it's the 50/50 composition, if it's decent tomorrow I'll go back and retake it.Quote:

My amateurish attempt
![]() ![]() Not perfect but i think the main problem with the original image is two fold. One is that the foreground is far too dominating of the entire image and 2 is that the sky and background are not colourful enough to compete with the forground. Not sure if it works but its worth a shot ![]() |

I think with that very dark foreground Doddy it's a definite candidate for combining two exposures.

I think it's partly the 50/50 composition which you mention.
I also think that you shot it a bit too low down. Thus being that the converging lines of the slipway, pointing to the middle, don't have as much draw to the eye as they should. I would personally try shooting this from slightly higher up, so I can still include the foreground detail but let the perspective bit leading off into the distance, do it's work. If that makes sense? |

For me, the foreground looks a little too contrasty...the highlights and deep shadows on the slipway are a little distracting.
You could pull the highlights back on the blown out sky by pulling the gamma slider back under the levels slider. I'd have a play with the slipway by using the eyedropper tool in the curves dialogue to singleout the highlights and shadows and try tweaking them. I'm late for work so I'll have a play tonight! |

I think the main problem is the composition, I really can't see what this is or work out what I'm supposed to be looking at. At the moment its a bit of background with a large section of mud in the middle.
I don't know if there is a better way to compose this but I would try a different angle, but then I can't actually work out what shape this outcropping is. Just my thoughts of course! ![]() |

thanks for the feedback guys, I think there is a shot in there somewhere, just need to find it. Weathers not bad again today, I'll pop back at lunchtime to see what the conditions are like.

I've looked at this a few times, and other than what has been said already I'm not sure I could add anything.
One thing I would be tempted to try is using a telephoto lens to try and compress the scene on the following shots. ![]() But please bear in mind, I still don't know what I'm talking about, lol |

I think sometimes the light's just not right. I keep going back to here http://www.thephotographyforums.com/...der_Castle_001 in hope of a better shot, but no luck so far.
