The Old Store
This store is over 100 years old! I love old stuff. I took this picture as a thankyou for the owners who graciously let me bring my youngins for pictures. Before I give it to them, I want to make sure its not ugly. Is the perspective ok? I mean should I have stood from a corner or taken a closer up pic of just the porch? C&C welcomed! P.S. Can you see the bullet holes?!

Re: The Old Store
I think this is a really good shot
Difficult to say if a more angled view would have been better or not, (as we can't see the view from the sides) but I think it would be worth doing just to see. You can always give them two or more pictures! In the event that you only took this one shot - slap your wrist! With this subject I think I would have taken several shots from every angle I could get, plus some close-ups of the many interesting elements of the store.

Re: The Old Store
i think you have a nice shot here , however trying to keep with the era , i personally would remove besser bricks from the fg(looks like they are used as steps ) also try to cover the same bricks that are used to hold it up (the support peers) , how would it be if you brought ground up to just above the bricks .So all you see is ground then board that is under veranda (full length board). I just feel it would give you more or the era that the old hut portrays.
Would of been exciting to have all the old items on hand to photograph and use as props , you must of had a ball ![]()

Re: The Old Store
Sorry Sue, going to have to disagree with you here, especially as this is going to be given to the people who live there. They want a photo of what is there, not what their house might look like without the risers. In a lot of places, putting the house off the ground was vital to keep the house safe from flash floods, snakes, all sorts of reasons and thus form part of the character of this cracking place.
The type of bricks shown there were certainly available for use 100 years ago so it isn't as though they are out of place as such but either way, I really think they are important to the view of the house. I think I'd have preferred an angular shot to show the side and front together but I also think if this shot is framed and given to the owners, they will be delighted with it :o) Cheers, Rob

Re: The Old Store
If am standing in the attic and thinking where is the light coming from,,and see all the light coming in from the shot gun holes,,,. When I moved in my old house I had two holes of such with the steady stream of sun light dancing thru the dark, your right very interesting from that point of view too...Of course your part of the country could be quite happy and rowdy for a number of reasons to blast a few signs,,,,Love the trees on the sides, very beautiful with the witch's hair....

Re: The Old Store
this is a lovely shot, i would have liked to see more of the side of the building as well, but in saying that i think anyone would be pleased with what you have done. i wouldnt bring the ground up as its not there in reality..... and I am sure you want to give them an image of the store as they know it and not as perhaps some would like to see it ( no offence meant to anyone).
all in all a great image so give yourself a pat on the back Fi |

agree with you on that , as i went on with what i would change to improve image for my taste ,as in fact as the image is for owners so not an issue re altering Rob
The type of bricks shown there were certainly available for use 100 years ago Cheers, Rob
this i find intriguing as i was unaware the besser brick was around 100 years ago , would be interested in how they made mould for this back then. Thought cement / concrete came in little later Regardless , as in fact it is for the owners i think as you say ,they will be totally impressed with your gift for thanking them.Where as its all about our own opinions on our comments , i still would like to see this adorable little hut without bricks as i still believe it would be more in era ,however this idea is one of curiosity rather than altering image that you are giving to owners. All said and done it is still a quaint little hut and you could imagine the stories it could tell .Still interested in other photos you have taken from this wonderful location and variety of intersting props ![]() |

i find this an intersting thought ,as unless iam mistaken , WE ALL remove and add things to some of our images that are not there in reality. So unless like this particular image were its for the owners ,or its an image for a model who wants a certain pose...where do we draw the line on whats reality and whats not ? |

Re: The Old Store
I am no expert on the history of Besser bricks (which I had never heard of until you gave them a name) as according to the internet Besser bricks are Australian so we probably don't have them under that name here.... but I have no idea. This picture is American so whether they have the Australian Besser brick I couldn't tell you.
Bricks have been made for at least 5,000 years so making a mould would not be at all difficult 100 years ago. I had a search on the internet regarding the availability of cement/concrete and that was most certainly available 100 years ago. Indeed, there are examples of its use of a type (1 part lime to 4 parts sand) existing from as far back as 300BC. Even as the product we are more familiar with today, it was a common product in the mid to late 1800s and the first concrete reinforced bridge in America was built in 1889 so yes, they did have this type of brick 100 years ago. That said, I can offer absolutely no idea one way or the other whether these particular bricks have been in situ since the place was built or whether old timber has been replaced with them since then. I guess we tend to think that a lot of things are more modern than they really are. It is of course common that a product might be new in one country but have been in existence elsewhere for a long time. Who knows? ![]() Cheers, Rob |

Re: The Old Store
The owners told me that this store used to be on another piece of property that was sold, so they moved the house to this property. I assume they added the cinder blocks when they moved, but I have know idea how it would of looked before the move, I think it would have had wooden steps. I live in one of the very first cities started in america so we have a LOT of OLD stuff! we have old civil war forts and everything! Thanks for all the Comments! Greatly appreciated.
