One from the 18-55.

As you can see, the Canon 18-55 does focus closer.
The edge sharpness appears to be well shy of the nikon 18-70 but none the less, pretty good for the second cheapest lens in the canon line up.

Not as good as your dragon (as expected with your name!) but good all the same! Versatile little lenses, the kit lens - my Stigma can get pretty close too and have used it when I've not got my macro
