Opinions please
I quite like this photo I took last week and have tried to critique it myself in order to learn what to look out for, so now I need to see if I"m on track and what you 'experts' can pick up as good or bad. It was taken outside on a bright but overcast day with no extra lighting or reflectors.
Thanks for looking - appreciate the feedback. ![]() Rachel ![]() |

Re: Opinions please
the face is a little soft, you need to focus on the eyes then keep focussed while you frame, other than that its a beautiful photograph, i may have moved my position slightly over to my right? but thats just me, good photo though

Re: Opinions please
I think the left hand pulls attention away from the face, not helped by the diagonal of the arm leading you to the hand but not back to the face. Having said that, you can't really pose kids at that age so I doubt there was much you could do about it.
I tend to agree that moving slightly to your right might have improved the picture - for me the closeness of the head to the wood on the left of the picture cramps the subject a bit. The eyes are totally lost, which is a real shame. A bit of eye contact would have totally changed the atmosphere but again it does have a kind of reflective, pensive air to it. On the positive side I really like the flat lighting with just enough contrast to provide good modelling of the features. |

Re: Opinions please
I've had good luck with a zoom with condishions like this. Forgetting about trying for a face shoot and get the surroundings and that ever so sought after eye shot when they kinda start to play. The telephoto plays that duel role for up close and separate, and backing off for your surroundings.

Re: Opinions please
It's a lovely natural shot, the only problem is the eyes or the lack of them. All we can see is two dark slits but it is still a pleasant shot. I think a quick shout of the child's name would have given you a split second or two as Rachel glanced towards you. You have to be quick but it would have opened the eyes up. Other than that I would still keep this as a lovely family photo for the album of memories
