Orton effect first trial
Hi to all.
I have attempted the Orton technique using the camera only - multiple exposure mode. Here it is and I am waiting for any comments on how to make the technique better. Thank you!! Used a tripod; remote; zoom lens at 125mm and f/5.6; K10D camera; ambient light. Edited: oops! Where is the picture?; anyone here please help. How do I copy the pic into this post? ![]() Last edited by Sonsey : 16-11-2007 at 15:03. Reason: Added picture. |

Re: Orton effect first trial
You need to upload it somewhere and then refer to it
In the Gallery there's a button which does all the refer/copying for you: BB code, copy to clipboard. Then you right click, paste into your thread |

Re: Orton effect first trial
Thanks for the help, Markulous but I still cannot do it!
You said to go to "Gallery" (mine?) and use a button for refer/copy, BB code, copy to clipboard, etc... but I can't even find that part nowhere here. Nevertheless, I'll try a couple more things before giving up. Cheers. Edit: Ok, I have found that button; thanks to all again. Last edited by Pentaxbuff : 16-11-2007 at 22:57. Looks better then the corn field I tried this effect on
I like it, but I'm certainly not an expert on this process. |

Re: Orton effect first trial
Interesting 'soft' effect but you're getting a 'ghost' shadow which isn't doing any favours

Re: Orton effect first trial
Well this was my first shot at it.
Of course, it was done in the comfort of my home, the plant on the kitchen table, and I used a tripod; perfect conditions, right? There is a couple of ghost shadows, top left and bottom. This could be reframed and eliminated but I thought of presenting the pic as is, with no tweaking. Thanks for the reply. |

Hey Markulous!
As I told Dogdots: Well this was my first shot at it. You are right though with those shadows, I could have been more careful. Thank you for the input, much appreciated! Cheers. |

![]() Pentaxbuff this is my try at the Orton Effect. I liked it, but guess its off of what the Orton Effect is sapose to look like I actually feel that with this effect you have room to play with it and with certain photos you can get some different results. But then I like to mess around some and push limits alittle to much ![]() I have seen this process done on photos such as yours with a simple subject in the shot. As you can see I chose a photo thats full of subject ![]() Dogdots/Mary |

Re: Orton effect first trial
Dogdots,
I like that picture too, with the contrasty and natural colours against a very blue sky. The effect wanted, I suppose, is quite not what one wants with "Orton" because it is, as you mentioned, "full of subjects". I think a single subject (a flower, a car, a ring ... etc.) at close range or a far away "subjects" (such as your corn field, a distant forest, even mountains) would do the trick; one rule I am applying is to try to contain the said subject so that it doesn't "move". Then, always using the tripod for exactness, I shoot first with an out-of-focus effect; with this you can control how much of the background will be blurred; then I take the next shot in focus. I am still experimenting with this technique ... amount of exposure, distance, f/stop differential between the first and second shot, etc ... Well, that is it for now ... snowstorming here and gotta go for an errand at the friendly local hospital. Cheers! |

Re: Orton effect first trial
I'm glad you liked it. And it is out of the ordinary in the Orton method, but who says one can't push the limits alittle
Heck....someone who doesn't do photos and just happened to look at our photos would see just the photo for what it is and maybe like it. Snowing in Quebec---not here yet. You would have thought we would have had snow already. You state that you have the second most beautiful sunsets in the world---then ND must have the 1st ![]() Thanks for your thoughts Pentaxbuff---- Dogdots/Mary |

Re: Orton effect first trial
Thanks for the reply!
Well, I'd say you're right; photos are just what they are to us. If someone else likes them, great! Yeah, snow here and more tomorrow; actually they are calling for near 20-25cm!! Great occasion for more pics the day after. So, our neck-of-the-woods is competing for sunsets with ND? I'll just have to go and take a good look at those shots! Thanks for the warning ... ![]() |
