Pic of my son..

I took this pic of my son the other night... had my 50mm lens on so this was what I could fit in the pic.. I actually love the pic.. but was wondering what the 'pro's' think..

Is it ok to cut off the tops of heads? Or is it generally a no-no?

Anything else I could have done differently? (Besides change lenses as this was a spur of the moment shot...)

Since i'm still a newbie, I really appreciate all the fabulous advice I get here! Thanks!!

Re: Pic of my son..

Could have taken it in portrait orientation I suppose, to get more of his head in, make it look less 'snap-shot'-y. But still a good spur of the moment capture, good focussing.

Re: Pic of my son..

There are many sacrosanct rules of composition and at least one or two deal with the cutting off of certain body parts. However, (and there is always a "however") the one rule most often cited regarding shots like this one that turn out so pleasing and fun is "Forget the rules" and have fun. And it looks like that is just what you did.
So, good for you - you'll probably enjoy this shot for many years to come.

Looks good to me with the Xmas lights as a backdrop!

Re: Pic of my son..

This is a great shot - just the type of candid I like because it look spontaneous and natural. Nice work!

Re: Pic of my son..

Nice natural candid showing great rapport with the subject ('spose that's to be expected, ). As others have said, don't bother about 'rules' the shot works and works well. Also, Jack's pimp is right on the money, well done Jack!

Idea: for those without the skills/confidence/experience to edit images like this maybe Pixalo could have an area where full size files could be uploaded so volunteers could do the editing for folk in the spirit of friendship. The resulting edited version could then be downloaded by the owner for printing! ???

Thanks Les, and I think that might be a good idea, depending on what the general consensus is. Let's find out

Good idea though it is, the feeling is that it could lead to images being hijacked, so the disadvantages would outweigh the advantages. And with using the current system, doing modifications convey the potential and the description can more than adequately describe the process. Of course, you could always arrange to email each other with the original/resultant image although please bear in mind that you'd obviously be going outside the Pixalo site
