Re: Pollution
A good strong compo here, Fiona
Again, it needs brightening up. This one's quite contrasty, so I'd just lighten the whole image a bit, so we can see more detail. Colours look good here. |

Re: Pollution
Like the other one from this location, it is flat. That might well be an accurate representation of what it was like there, but it does not come across well in the photograph.
The RAW software ought to be able to sort it out, don't forget you can save multiple versions to combine again later. Also, don't forget that once you have made corrections or tweaks in the RAW software, you can then open the image in PS to make any further adjustments that might improve things.d |

Re: Pollution
RAW images are very commonly flat and this is no exception. That isn't because you've done anything wrong Fi, just that you haven't yet done what the file is waiting for in order to boost it. RAW files by their very nature are rarely going to be how you want them right from the camera simply because they are untouched, unprocessed files. The sheer logistics of using sensors means that we can be as careful as we like at getting it right in camera but some post-pro work will almost always be needed, however minor.
In this case the contrast boosted and, as Charlotte said, the overall tone lifted, will make it gritty and powerful, a real social comment on pollution. So, get to it lass, but don't expect to get it perfect first time. Processing RAW files does take a bit of getting used to and I will happily help talk you through the CS2 process. The benefit is that you have an image with greater tonal range and in this particular shot I am sure you'll end up with something with real impact. Cheers, Rob

Re: Pollution
I took the title and just emphasised! OK, a little cliche, but the dark, forbidding smoke being pushed aside by the bright, clean air!

Re: Pollution
Love that adjustment, particular because it brings the boat into play which I didn't even notice before but now it absolutely makes the picture by giving it a human relationship with the pollution. The fact that it's a fishing boat, seeking to take food from our oceans while the air above is dark with unburnt hydrocarbons really gives this a story to tell.
Great stuff (though I'd prefer the black border to be just a little bit thinner, it is a bit to dominating). Cheers, Rob |

Re: Pollution
My gosh, Fi, do you still live there?
Is government doing anything about clean air initiatives? That looks horrible. The picture is incredibly evocative, particularly after the fix. |

Re: Pollution
I feel I should put in a word about the "pollution". I'm fairly certain it isn't! I'm 90% sure it's water vapour - I just darkened it down into pollution!

Re: Pollution
ok regarding the pollution....... some of it IS water vapour as Mark points out however, when you live there and have your washing covered in some kind of black dust and look at the extremely high incidences of asthma and skin disorders ( 3 kids in the last year died from asthma attacks), the extremely high incidences of cancer and leukemia throughout the area, then you begin to realise that it ISNT all water vapour.
And yes Skip i still live there, right in the shadow of the chimneys, and the place is falling down about itself. they have cut the staff down to dangerous levels and there is at least 1 emergency incident a year that we get told about and a few years ago it came out that the place had 4 incidences in one year that they had covered up. oh yes its a lovely place i live! lolol Fi |

Re: Pollution
That is so sad, Fi.
You would think that governments and regulatory agencies would have the gumption to go up agains industry and force them to clean up their act. I know, that is gross oversimplification and naive thought, but still...... |

Re: Pollution
such is life Skip, and at the end of the day i would like to bet that pollution from cars creates just as much........ and about 300 companies a year are taken to court for polluting rivers etc... and pay a token fine cos basically the gorernment would lose too much money if they cracked down too hard .... sad but true
