Pride

Hey everyone, I isolated this pic out of a series I posted in the people section.. I hope that is ok.

This was one of my favorites out of the series.. it shows how proud my son is of his Karate On this particular photo, I had to expand on the HDR capabilites of RAW. The sun was a harsh late fall sun that creates harsh shadows. I was forced to use powerful fill, and it was hard to keep his suit from blowing out and not underexpose his face at the same time.

I was able to get a few of these within the boundaries, and create mulitiple exposures from a single RAW file, which I then used some HDR techniques in PS.

Is there any ideas on how I could have improved here, ie.. reflectors ect..?

Rob

PS the sun was pointing about 60 degrees from the right side of the frame coming straight across his face..

Re: Pride

Pride certainly says it! He's certainly The Man!

You've controlled the exposure really well - and not just in the processing, but in the original shot. I suppose I could suggest just a touch of burn to bring out the clothing detail/shadows, but it's no way important (tho' it would improve any B/W you might do of this)

Re: Pride

I really can't see much fault in the lighting here Rob, it is excellent. Admittedly you would probably prefer not to have to go through intensive post-processing to get this result and for that i would have to say reflectors are the best bet. One thing you might think about is using a macro ring-flash as the fill-in flash as this will both soften the shadows and stop adding extras from the flash itself.

A lot of people only use a ring-flash for macro work but they are excellent for portraits as well.

Must dash but hope that offers an alternative at least.

cheers,
Rob

I took your advice and took the burn tool to it, and I was able to squeeze a little more detail, also, I added a white inner border, I thought it worked well... Thanks for the comments..
