rally car
hey all, this is my first pic ive put on here so if i havent obeyed the rules forgive me!
im wondering what could i have done to make this photo better or what can still be done by photoshop to make it better! it was taken at a rally in donegal in ireland! ![]() i havent got all the settings it was taken at but... Canon 300D, 18-55 lens, cloudy conditions, handheld, pretty high shutter speed, cant think of anything else! i usually put a border on the photos but havent in this case! feel free to mess around with it to help me with new ideas!! thanks! Hi,
Looks to be within the rules from what i can see (800 pixels longest side, 160k or less) It is also a very nice shot! Mind posting the colour version too? Cheers. |

Both ok shots, the only question i would ask, is what were you aiming to capture ?
To me the car looks stationary ? like it has been parked while the picture was taken, theres a small amount of blur on the wheels, but otherwise no indication it was actually moving !! Thats not to say its bad, just what i can see in the pic ! |

yep, i know what you mean, i wanted to show speed as well as scenery but as you say it looks more scenery!
would you agree that the colour one looks better or has a better feel about it?? if you know what i mean!! thanks |

They both look like they need a sharpen in PS or similar, im a rally fan myself, so prefer the colour one, as it gives more of the detail on the car, its possible with a tweak the B&W one would have more impact though !

I prefer the colour one myself, not enough action in the B&W one for it to work I think.

These aren't easy to take although they do move a bit slower on the hairpins. That's actually worked against you as the motion is pretty much frozen and the picture doesn't give the feel of the speed these guys move at.
Part of the appeal of rallying to me is the colours so I prefer the colour version but the car is fighting with the scenery to make an impression. A closer crop, including the road but excluding the cliffs and beach, would have been better in my opinion. |

My vote goes to the colour one.
I'll echo what Dod has said. Steve, I've had a nose through your website and all your images seem soft, it could be just my eyes, they aint what they used to be .... are you doing any kind of sharpening after you have re-sized the image for net use ? |

thanks for comments!
some of the photos on the site were taken with a Canon A1 film camera and they are softer. i had to decrease the quality of the 2 above so i dont know if that would make much difference to them or not! i did notice that some were noticably soft but that could be down to poor camera setup! lol no, i havent used any sharpening tools on the shots before i put them on web! i just try and get them on asap for the drive4rs/fans! lol what would you advise me to do with them?! dod - i know what you mean by saying a closer crop as thats what i usually do with other rally shots i try to get the shot to be mostly car, but this time i wanted to try and get the scenery included aswell since the cars arent doing much speed or sideways action!! i cropped in the likes of the one below as it has pretty good sideways action! http://www.jsa-media.co.uk/rallygall...album=9&pos=30 |

Hey Steve, you have a lot of cool photos on your site!!
Much better than the one you posted here. For me, but it's only my opinion, the b&w for rally or motorsports do not work very well. Because part of the sport it's the color of the cars, the sponsors, etc. BUT you got a lot of great shots!! |

I think with regards to composition, if you were to split the photo across the middle (where the barrier is) you would have a reasonable "sceneic" shot above the line and a decent action shot below it. As stated by others, it needs a degree of motion blur to maximise full impact of the speed the car is doing - even if that were constrained to just the wheels. PhotoShop has some motion filters that you might be able to use but I personally would crop the image - either that or blurr the snot out of the background.
BTW, nice shots you have on your site. Funny seeing a Mk II Escort in there too, talk about a blast from the past!
