You know more about maximizing the potential in mono than I do, Dave. So, I'll confine my thoughts to composition - have you thought about flipping the shot vertically?
There is something inherently more positive about things going up vs going down.

Cheers Paul. I did think of it, but was concerned the light on the planes may look wrong up the other way....... no harm in trying though

How a bout having it in colour

Actually Dave I think that both your other shots shown in the sharing section are stronger images than this. I would honestly stick with those, it's not that this is a bad shot, just that the others are better, maybe stick with those and consider it a good days shoot?

I really like the photo--only I was drawn to the clouds and exhust of the planes and had to look for the planes. Must be my monitor. Then again that is good. It makes someone pause and look closer. Which I did. I see a plane buff liking this shot. As for the planes going up or down---makes no difference to me. They each represent something different for the eye.
