Roche Abbey

This one was taken with a 24 mm lens. I would like to have been further back to use a longer lens and make the abbey larger in relation to the bridge but then I would have lost the river. Crits. welcome good and bad.

Re: Roche Abbey

Technically this is a good shot, nice and sharp, sky has plenty of interest, conversion to B&W has been done well so there's plenty of contrast and detail.

For me the composition doesn't quite gel, I think you've got the point in your comment about making the abbey larger in comparison to the bridge. The bridge dominates the scene and where it should lead my eye to the lovely shapes and detail in the abbey I find that actually I'm constantly focussing on the bit where the bridge meets the wall on the far bank.

While nice I don't think the river is an essential part of the shot and could have been sacrificed, did you take any from further back and perhaps further along the rive (to the left of this image)?

cheers

Dan

Re: Roche Abbey

now i like this. I would be tempted to lose the bottom inch so that the bridge starts in the corner and u can just see the top of the arch .
My problem with it is that there is not enough seperation between the tones of the bridge and the background, the abbey is fine cos is a lot lighter but the bridge merges too much. perhaps on a different layer bring the briges tones down a bit? i would also be tempted to use a little lucis art to bring out the details in the stone work.
a nice shot tho with loads of potential

Re: Roche Abbey

Dan, thank you for your helpful comments. I could not move further down the river it was rather dangerous for anyone who is a bit unsteady or their feet and that's me.

Thank you too Fiona. I see your points and agree. Funnily enough I selected the bridge area and lightened it before posting. Perhaps I shouldn't have.
