Re: Sabre tooth

This is quite good, with a reasonable amount of impact. I do think it's a little tightly cropped, + looks like you were trying to crop out burnt highlights at the top and/or a distracting BG. I would like to see complete fangs + also more of his head. The face, + particularly the eyes, need to be in sharper focus. It's a bit high-contrast, and you've lost detail in both highlights + shadows; could you try to reduce contrast, in order to rescue more detail? I do like the angle you've shot from, i.e. "in your face", and also the composition (other than the points I raised above).

Re: Sabre tooth

Is this from Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh? I was there with the family last year.

Many people will have taken a shot of this statue and come away with a record of what it looked like. But you've managed to find a way to make it come alive, it really seems to be leaping at the camera, the angle you've chosen, the processing and even the out of focus parts all add to that feeling of movement.

I think this is really clever.

cheers

Dan

Re: Sabre tooth

thanx both of you, yes it is from dynamic earth dan.
Charlotte , i did crop out highlites, but not many, the focussing is deliberate as i wanted the focus to be on the front rather than the eyes( breaking the rules i know lol) to give the feeling of him coming towards you.

You certainly achieved that Fi but I still think the impact would have been even greater if the whole face were in focus, thus reinforcing the closeness of it, or otherwise you could try adding a bit of motion blur for effect; as it is, it's neither in sharp focus nor blurred. Just an idea, anyway, + my personal interpretation

Re: Sabre tooth

I like the idea of this shot but it looks to me as if it's been over-sharpened. I think it might also have been better to get the whole of that right tooth in for maximum effect!!

Re: Sabre tooth

This shot has impact ! Yeah, there are some technical issues, however, not every photo has to be technically perfect with all pieces and parts whole and in focus - Sometimes when you break the rules you end up with more than expected and I think you did that here.
This shot made an immediate impression on me before the photographer in me started to look at it critically - that's good. Well done, Fi.

Re: Sabre tooth

thanx all, have to say in my defence that it was very dark where i shot it, and had no tripod ( nor room to set one up ) sounds like excuses and i suppose it is but hey there ya go....... and yep Paul i do agree that sometimes we forget to "like" an image cos we are too busy being photographers! lol

Re: Sabre tooth

That a photo is not sharp does not necessarily mean its doomed. You tried to focus on the front but even the teeth and snout don't seem particularly well resolved - it might just be a tricky subject in the first place.

I like the crop - its an effective way of emphasising the ferocious face so I disagree with comments suggesting its too tight. Background is absolutely not needed here. If you were using a zoom lens you could have curled the barrel while snapping at a slowish exposure to really make it look like it's lunging at the camera. I think not being in focus is not a huge issue but it needs something to play on the ROAR factor so you're 100% thinking about how formidable it looks and not caring at all that you can't see every tastebud on the tongue.

Have a play is my advice.

Jeez Fiona, this one is going to give me nightmares.I may have been tempted to have the eyes even more 'de-focused' but it works for me,I can see where you are coming from.

I visit 'cause when the bitching/boasting/slagging/insults etc etc start flying its quite funny really.Grown men [almost exclusively] behaving like spoilt weans and usually over trivia. There are one or two who are 'unbelievable',both in their opinion of themselves and their talent, and their capacity to be snide and rude at the drop of a hat
This place,by contrast,is SO00000000 much friendlier,a haven of sanity, with just as good advice given and a is just a better place in general [my opinion,of course].
