Re: sandstone fountain

A lot of detail to try and capture. When I think fountain I think water so I would prefer more detail on the water which looks a bit lost. Looks more statue than fountain. Not keen on the tv arial in back ground.

Don't know what happened there I didn't finish the post and it was posted. Anyway let me finish .I like the mood of the clouds goes well with the fountain.

Re: sandstone fountain

Two things bother me a bit

1. The background is a bit fussy and detracts from the image somewhat - particularly that you can see a TV aerial on one of the rooftops. Was this the "cleanest" angle you could have shot from?

2. I'd have prefered to have isolated the fountain with shallower depth of field, something that may not have been possible with the (seemingly) wide angle lens that was used. In such instances I'd switch to a mid to long telephoto and shoot the fountain from as bar back as I could, using the magnification of the lens to isolate the fountain itself.

Out of curiosity, whereabouts is this fountain? I think I've seen it before.

[Edit] It's outside the Botanic Gardens in Glasgow, a stone's throw from The 'Barras

Re: sandstone fountain

nearly VP its outside the Peoples Palace, the botanicals are at the other end of kelvingrove
Unfortunately i only have the kit lens so have no chance to zoom ..........YET! lol although it will be a while til i get a zoom, regarding the angle I actualyl wanted the peoples palace behind the fountain but that would have meant have Queen vicki at the top looking the wrong way

many thanx

Re: sandstone fountain

Good lighting here Fi, this kind of shot is so easy to either have lots of burnt out areas or a lot of dark shadow areas where detail is lost. You have caught a lovely mid ground so the light areas have not burnt out and the shadows have ample detail in them.

As there isn't much water anyway, you can't do much about that and the TV aerial is a two second clone job but the rest is not at all bad so well done.

Cheers,
Rob

Re: sandstone fountain

Its a beautiful fountain, would have been nice to see a bit more detail in the sculptures.

I like the way the eyes are drawn up through the image but im not a massive fan of the sky, i'm not really sure why, ive looked a few times and cant decide if its because its a mono sky or if i dont like the way the top of the fountain is lost in the clouds?!? Also i think the fountain has a slight tilt to the right?

Re: sandstone fountain

Fi I hope you don't mind but I just had to have a tinker with this one As I felt it was a little to light and in need of a contrast boost. Hope you like it.
