Re: Scissorhands
It took me a little while to find what was in focus because I kept wanting to look at the eyes. That may be becasue I know how impressive the eyes were on your other post. Maybe a tighter crop that allows the pincher to be more prominant. I like the experiment.

Re: Scissorhands
I this does not work that well for me. I really do not like the out of focus eyes. I makes me feel that I have the wrong pair of glasses on. There is just too little that is sharp in the picture. Perhaps I am just getting old and too set in my ways
.

Re: Scissorhands
It demonstrates dof but it also demostrates why its important to have something you can at least focus your eye upon

Re: Scissorhands
thank you for your comments. it's really interesting to read them - i had completly different comments on my polish macro forum where people really liked this one. i know it's different from what you used to see from macro shots but still - there is that spot for your attension - hand like scissor, and it's sharp. well, next photo will be more conventional i think

Re: Scissorhands
How did you get it to sit on a pencil with a rubber on the end?

M1ke it's not a pencil, it's grass with some dried to death end. i don't do studio macro with insects and all you see is pure nature

Re: Scissorhands
I don't know much about these things, but how did you get a pure black background on this shot, and an olive green background on the other shots? I mean, I have tried to replicate this with my camera and I just can't seem to do it. Was it dark when you took this shot, or were you holding black card behind it when you were creeping up trying not to scare it away? You see, with a fuji and a clamp on glass it's near to miraculous. Has anyone else had similar results?
Maybe I should go back to the drawing board?

Re: Scissorhands
I think the weakness of this shut is summed up in your own comment Marcin.... I couldn't work out which bit was sharp until you said about the scissorhand. It didn't even occur to me from the title. It simply forms far too small a part of the picture to work for me. Without any explanation, this would simply look like an out of focus macro shot. I thought I was gonna hear 'Should've gone to Specsavers' while I was looking at this!

Re: Scissorhands
i was thinking about your comments and i think it's because you were not prepared to see this photo
. on other forum after series of experiments with DOF from other forum users, nobody was complaining but we were just sharing those photos to compare effects.of course i agree - the only sharp element on my photo is small and hard to find so it's not really good one . i know that you are right about that - and it's just experiment.

Re: Scissorhands
M1ke I would suggest that Marcin has used flash to get the black background, and when not used the natural colour is shown (eg grass).
Marcin Interesting shot but not one for me. Though my impression was more of motion than anything else. |

Re: Scissorhands
Sorry Marcin, but this shot doesn't work for me. The tiny bit that's in sharp focus is just that - too tiny to notice. If you didn't point it out to us, I don't think we would've ever found it.
There's a good reason that we all expect to see sharp eyes in a macro shot of critters, and that's because the eyes are the best place for the main point of sharp focus. IMHO of course
