Re: Smithills Lodge

I like the colours and the exposure is good but perhaps a lower angle to get that sense of perspective so inherent to wide-angle lenses?
Also maybe add a graduated effect on the sky in PS, as I can see it could be made to look more prevalent.

Re: Smithills Lodge

You took the words out of my mouth Jack. I thought this would be improved with a low viewpoint as it would shorten the water - nice as it is, it it does dominate the centre of the shot, the jetty would be brought into the shot much more and would add its own impact with its texture, and the whole shot would have more drama.

As it is now, it is nice, but I think it could be mighty.

Sorry about that Ray, a few posts were lost last night in our server change over. We're getting back up to speed now and we're sorry for any inconvenience this has caused.

See here for further details - Possible interruption to normal Pixalo service!

I don't think I'm qualified to do that Ray!

...but I'm sure we'd all try and help with any specific issues you post up.

Re: Smithills Lodge

Ray, I have done a few tutorials on here that use Photoshop and am an Adobe-accreditted PS trainer (sorry, I can't travel all the way to Bolton!) so if you have any specific areas that you'd like some help with, I am more than happy to make some mor tutorials for you. I have done some that you will find in the Tutorials section (Curves, Layers, Cloning, Mono conversion, etc) so take a look at those (plus some by other people, sorry, not trying to just talk up my own here!) and let me know if you'd like something else covered.

Cheers,
Rob

Re: Smithills Lodge

Sorry, forgot to mention the picture LOL.

It's a lovely scene and the composition is beautiful. It just lacks something in that water to give us a focal point. The jetty is perfectly positioned and leads our eye straight into the water but when we get there, we find nothing. The reflections around the sides are gorgeous and there is much to enjoy in this picture.

The lighting is good but perhaps a tad flat but this is very easy to rectify (see the tutorial on Curves). All you need then is a nice swan/duck/fisherman or whatever to finish it off

Well done, this is definitely not how I think of Bolton

Cheers,
Rob

Re: Smithills Lodge

Sure is Ray. First of it depends on what BG the grandkids are already on. If it is fairly plain, have a look at Vinny's tutorial here:

How to: White Backgrounds - Pixalo Photography Community

If the BG is more complex, three things you might find useful:

1. Use the Extract Tool (I could do a tutorial for that if you'd find it useful, though haven't done a search to see if there is one already) to separate them from the BG.

2. Use the magic tool to select the children instead of the BG and then reverse the selection (Ctrl+shift+I) so that the BG is selected.

3. Send me the photo and I'll try it for you and do a tutorial on it at the same time

Cheers,
Rob
