Oh, I think the exif data is intact, but incase, it is a 4 second exposure at f8, wb was left on sunlight intentionally to bring out the yellows and oranges of the light. Behind the tap is a fairly big road, and there are traffic lights in view.

Re: Something a little different... (long exposure)

An intriguing abstract. I like the processing, particularly the blend of colours + tones. Good use of DoF. I like the patterns of stripey orange in the BG, but find the flares at the top LH + RH corners very distracting - my eye is immediately drawn to the brightest one on the RHS in particular. I like the texture on the tap.

The crop seems a little cramped, I'd like to see more space around the tap, particularly at the bottom. As it is, the tap is plonked smack bang in the middle of the frame. I'd prefer it to be on the top third with more of the vertical pipe + running water visible. But perhaps you were cropping out distractions.

Good work, I like it

Thanks for the detailed critique!!

I was indeed cropping out distractions, the street lighting around the rest of the picture would have blown out completely at 4 seconds. I felt the traffic lights would be a fair compromise.

There is no processing on the shot, think i bumped my levels by a point or two, but this is pretty much out of camera!

Oh and btw, ISO 200.

Re: Something a little different... (long exposure)

I think this is lovely TIM. The oranges and reds suit this nicely. If you did want to post-pro the shot I think I would just clone out the three points of light in the BG BUT I also recognise that the image needs them or else the reflections won't make sense. You could mute them a touch I guess.

But this is a lovely piece of work and well worth the effort. Superb focusing that makes the tap pop even though it's colours are similar to the BG. Something genuinely different to most shots we get to see and a reminder to go out and look for the picture which IS there if w look hard enough.

Well done,
Rob

Re: Something a little different... (long exposure)

I'm with Rob, I really like this, it's such a simple subject, but the long exposure has given it some great detail. Also, if those points of light were removed, there would be no sense in the reflections, so I'd leave them, it's a good study using the street lighting. I'm off doing a night shoot in Bedford tonight by the river, just hope I get some effects as good as this.

Re: Something a little different... (long exposure)

Hey Sarah, don't know if it is still there (long time since I was in bedford) but there must be a decent night shot to be had of the boathouse near the bridge?

Looking forward to seeing what you come back with

Cheers,
Rob

Re: Something a little different... (long exposure)

Thanks for the great comments! I was really happy with this, so glad to hear other photographers approve! Will try toning down the background lights a bit, and if I like the result I'll pop it up here!

Rob - Just posted a photo of a tree, I liked and have lots of bridge shots which I'll post later. Disco going on at the boat house & all big doors closed. Want to try that again when there is something going on.
