Re: St Columba's

Maybe too much sky/sea?

Corrected yellow cast, dodge and burn sky/sea to inject a little detail/interest, increased saturation a touch

Re: St Columba's

What was the intent of the photo? The answer to that question answers your cropping question.

A personal choice would have been to cut in close to the shore, leaving enough to indicate the location but not enough to distract. The Sky and the tower would then combine to indicate the imposing spirituality of the site. Cropping the other way, leaving the sea and cutting the sky would seem to indicate the remoteness / unavailability of the spiritual context.

I think it is a great photo but needs the crop to make it a good subject.

Re: St Columba's

thanx all.. much appreciated didint notice the colour cast Mark, although i think this was just the lighting cos there wasnt much anything that could cause it........ Geoff thanx for that i know where u are coming form...... but i do think it needs some of the water to balance the sky.

Re: St Columba's

I agree with you Fiona, it is too much of a 50/50 shot when cropped off like that. I like the original with the colour correction that Mark did. I like the balance of the image and the sky has enough interest to keep plenty of it in. The sea is also choppy enough to provide texture at the bottom but also it has the two red buoys which act as a lead line towards the cathedral.

The only very slight thing I'd prefer is to have the water line complete on the left hand side so that it goes past the land spur holding the cathedral and so lets the eye go right around to the back of the picture. Something like this....

Good pic here Fi, well done.... and watch out for that colour cast

Cheers,
Rob
