Re: St Ives Boats
can see how you were drawn into this , sought of gives me an eerie feeling . I feel it is a little cluttered ,as in too many boats in image,Maybe if you were able to just have few in the image would give bigger inpact .
You have definately got a great DOF and the image is well exposed and sharp. Regadless of having less boats i think you have a great image of course this is just my opinion others will see things in different way. |

Re: St Ives Boats
I LOVE this shot! The only thing I might change, and it's probabaly just my monitor (I'm at work) is the brightness/contrast. It seems a bit dark to me even though it appears to have been taken on a bright contrasty day.

Re: St Ives Boats
I like this shot and I disagree with Sue, I love the number of boats in it. It is so typical of the type of harbour we see a lot around the coastline of the UK. I guess it is probably more evocative to us who live here and enjoy this sort of scene on holidays and weekend trips but to people who are used to a different type ofcoastal scene it may not be that inspiring.
I love going to places like this, esepcially down in south Devon and Cornwall. Torbay is great for these harbours, Brixham is one of my favourites. The lighting could be lifted a tad but other than that I'd keep it like it is, great shot. Cheers, Rob

Re: St Ives Boats
Particularly like the repeating pattern of the red floats.

Re: St Ives Boats
Very cool picture. I am soooo happy that someone besides me thinks it is a tad dark.
The only thing I would do is to crop out the partial boats on the rhs. And I agree, the repeating red floats make the pic. skip |

Re: St Ives Boats
Thank you all so much for your kind comments!
I am new at this and the only way I can improve is by taking on board your comments and suggestions. The picture looks great printed out, but I see what you mean about the image on the screen being a little dark. I am trying to take photgraphs digitally, as if using a 35mm film camera, so not using any post processing with Photoshop, unless a very minor tweak is needed. My aim is to try and get the shot right first time! (not easy I know). So I try and spend time geting the composition and framing right, exposure etc.... I suppose, with the power of Photoshop, it would be easier for me to adjust the photos accordingly, so that a greater number were acceptable.. but I am going to try and resist the urge to play around with my shots, rather spending the processing time, taking photos. This is by no means a criticism of anyone who utilises the full power photoshop, but just my own way of learning about using my camera and to try an improve on my compositions. Thanks again and please keep your comments and advise coming! Steve |

Re: St Ives Boats
Steve...
I am with you. It takes so much effort and time to get it right in camera, but when it happens one gets a tremendous feeling of accomplishment. (And less time in front of the computer). Photoshop is the siren song, enticing us to shortcut the picture taking because we can "correct it in ps". Don't get me wrong, PS has a huge place in processing and creating effects. Now I use photoshop a lot because I don't get it right in camera very often , but it brings a smile to my face when I have to change very little at the 'puter. So, Steve, I applaud your efforts. skip |
