Re: The Stare

Great feather detail on his head, but why are the neck feathers lighter and out of focus? Processing?

Super shot

I do see what Skip means, + it simply looks like his chest is overposed, even though the head is spot on

Fab bokeh

Re: The Stare

lovely shot! i do see what skip says but i didint until i had read his post.......... so does that say its not that bad? it is a bit strange how the focus ust seems to suddenly follow a line of his feathers and then become soft tho.

Re: The Stare

would of liked to see the neck be the same as head in the sense of darkness , also they look flat compared to head .Great focus and detail in head. Sorry ,but fail to see any Bokeh in image, again thats down to how each interpretates it.Still, think you have a great image , can just about feel his beady eye

The green background, i.e. everything that isn't the bird, is the bokeh in this image. That isn't down to interpretation, that is the bokeh. The only time you wouldn't have any bokeh is if everything in the picture were in sharp focus.

Re: The Stare

Nicely comp'd - add my name to the ones not bothered by the neck (focus is spot-on where it counts) as well as those that don't consider that bokeh , just OOF BG (which is great, BTW, allowing perfect isolation of the subject)

Re: The Stare

This may be old, and I don't want to start a huge discussion or hijack the thread, but can somebody tell me concisely if there is a difference between bokeh and shallow dof?

Thanks

Re: The Stare

Skip, shallow DoF means that there is only a very small subject, or small amount of the subject, in focus, + the rest of the image is OOF. Bokeh is a term used to describe the OOF area of the image. Simple (to me, anyway!)

"Bokeh (from the Japanese boke ぼけ, "blur"[1]) is a photographic term referring to out-of-focus areas in an image produced by a camera lens."

Bokeh - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Re: The Stare

You're welcome Skip

For those who are in denial that the OOF area is "bokeh", the point of my comment on it is that you can see that it's a natural BG, i.e. green foliage, + thus places the bird in its natural enviroment (not caged), which I find adds to the image. Also, I find the subtle blend (not blotchy) of greens very pleasing, not allowing any distraction from the bird, + the contrasting yet subtle colour sets the bird off very well. Hope that clarifies the meaning + purpose of my comment on the bokeh

Since I'm obviously in a disagreeable mood: can we say "outdoor" as, unless this an extraordinary wildlife shot, it's a captive bird and so out of it's environment?

But we are both in agreement that the BG's good!
