Re: Stoney Creek Mill Pond
Lovely still water - whilst I'd prefer another element (object in water, pool of light, etc) the shot works well, as is

Re: Stoney Creek Mill Pond
the reflections are nice, but i think there is too much of the same thing and it all gets kinda lost in amongst all that greenery.

Re: Stoney Creek Mill Pond
It's fairly noisy (subject nature - not talking about signal noise or anything like that) but dammit I like it.
It is a left-heavy composition, I don't find myself looking at that big patch of reflected foliage on the bottom right very much, so perhaps sacrificing that and a portion of the bottom to keep the aspect ratio might work. It looks like a slight ripple is present along the bottom of the frame as the reflection appears to distort there so that might work. Then again it might not. Square or near-as crop perhaps? Leaving out the frame right of the sunlit tree next to the thick trunk in the centre may work. sorry I've restricted this to various possible crops - the exposure and focus I have no complaint. Unusual shot and who can ask for more? |

Re: Stoney Creek Mill Pond
first thing I thought of was that you made the reflection, it looks like you needed to back off on the opacity
, but I like the picture and replied in the gallery ![]() |

Re: Stoney Creek Mill Pond
This shot was taken between 8 and 9am on a morning with hardly a breath of breeze. The sun was just starting to illuminate the far side of the pond. As I approached the pond we disturbed a flock of about a dozen turkey who retreated up the hill.
Looking back at my psd file, it looks like there was about a 75% crop of the lower right and then a levels adjustment and some cloning of a few bright spots. Added the frame and there you have it. I wouldn't begin to know how to "create a reflection" of such a complex scene. Besides, I've learned the hard way that less (processing) is more - particularly with nature shots - I think the human eye can spot when something has been altered - it looks, you know....unnatural. ![]() The sun-filled area to the top left is where I wanted your eye to flow. That is why it is where it is - on the upper third. I find my eye goes there first and then down one of the large tree trunks to its reflection and across to other tree reflections then back to the upper left sunny area. I like it when my eye can make a round trip and find many interesting things to focus on along the way.

Re: Stoney Creek Mill Pond
I quite like it, I cant say too much as Im on the laptop and colour etc is a bit pants but personally I would of liked to have seen more of the trees upwards
I agree with other comments about something in the water a boat etc would draw the eye nicely and give focus |

Re: Stoney Creek Mill Pond
I was watching a tutorial on making reflections in CS3, the Dr. Russel Brown show. What a crack up that guy is. Good tip though, in your picture my eye goes to the green tree in the upper right, to the blue leaves to the left of it, and then to the water and across to the light in the water and up,,your right that's around trip.

Re: Stoney Creek Mill Pond
Recently heard a discussion of the rule of thirds with the 4 points where the lines cross referred to as the 4 power points. It was suggested that the lower right power point is the most powerful. Western populations, who read from left to right and top down will always naturally end reading/viewing in the lower right. It would be different for those Eastern populations who read right to left.
Based on the assertion that the lower right power point being the most powerful, I have flipped the picture above horizontally. Do you think it makes a difference? ![]() |
