Re: A taster
Nice use of foreground rock (and not too much black!!) and controlled the exposure well. But I feel the sky's a little empty - tho' nothing you can do about that!

Thanks Mark, yeah the sky was a little boring (I have some others that I will go through later, which have similar sky to the pano one, so better), but I dunno if it's your monitor you talked about, the sky has a decent gradation of colour, that might not show up on it, still not the most impressive though.... ![]() [edit: thanks for the edit ] |

Re: A taster
I see, maybe a little is lost, the gradient is subtle, but you're not missing much

Re: A taster
The subtle tones in the sky are visible its just that compared to the amount of interest in the rest of the picture it leaves the top quarter looking empty. A square crop (only taking off the top) would bring it much more balance
![]() Its a great scene and well captured, this is where landscape photography gets hard though, mother nature has to be willing to play the game too and if she doesn't, then there is simply no amount of camera skill that will get around that!! Try a squarer crop Jack as it will balance up much better, especially as you have placed the rock in a nice diagonal to the sun and exposed the foreground well at the same time as the background ![]()

Re: A taster
have to say the second shot is a huge improvement, the eye can now appreciate the sky without becoming bored with it!

Re: A taster
Lovely shot that Jack, definitely much better cutting off some of the flat sky and moving the horizon up to the top third. Proportions work well and the colours on the waves give balance to the whole picture. Good stuff.

Re: A taster
Going against the grain, I disagree about the crop. I much prefer the original, just as it is. The crop has taken the focus away from the sky + placed it on the sea instead, i.e. the 'dead space' is now in the middle of the shot instead of at the top where it was before. It has, as a consequence, lost the lovely curves of the halo surrounding the sun, which in itself is plenty for me to look at in that beautiful sky. I think it would make a great poster, love it
