Tram at night - Hong Kong
I took this picture in Hong Kong where I live, its only first try, need to improve, I wanted to have the old style tram at motion as contrast to the huge video screen on the building.
Any comments and critiques are welcomed. Roni

Re: Tram at night - Hong Kong
Now thats a hard one to get exposure right for , as the screen will always be brighter, plus other parts of the shot also. Like the idea of what you are trying to achieve & with some work in PhotoShop you could tone down the background & bring out the tram more in the shot.
If you want to see what can be achieved, look to upload shot in "PIMP THAT PHOTO" section of gallery & ask members to tweak shot to effect you are after ![]() Hope that helps |

Re: Tram at night - Hong Kong
As Dave says....a hard photo. I think the screen is the problem - it keeps drawing me from the tram.

Re: Tram at night - Hong Kong
yep the tram gets lost in the background cos the eye wants to go to the screen.
I agree with Dave i think its a picture that could be saved in PS Fi |

Re: Tram at night - Hong Kong
Thanks, I'll play with it, I can use PS and GIMP to dim the background, I also think its too bright, and I cannot achieve it with camera only. I also need to take the picture again where there is no buses there, so the tram is more dominant.
But do you think the composition as itself is OK? And will it be better if I expose in low speed so the tram is less sharp? |

Re: Tram at night - Hong Kong
Composition is good for screen...I would let the tram run to the right a bit more, so on 1/3 vertical line, for nicely balanced shot. Like the sound of slow shutter for tram, so why not try one as normal & one for blur effect....note you'll need to make a shutter speed of half a sec plus I would think, to make it look intentional rather than just blurred. Try different speeds & let us know which one worked best

Re: Tram at night - Hong Kong
i think a slow shutter speed would give an entirely different image, and would be interesting to see, it would certainly give the feeling of movement etc.

Re: Tram at night - Hong Kong
I agree with all that has been said. I would also take two photos and bring them together so you can get the screen right and also the FG. If you a 1/2 exposure for the FG the screen will be virtually white.
If the bus is strongly motion blurred, it will be fine if the BG is nice and sharp as you'll have a nice contrast that way. I'll be interested to see the next attempts. Cheers, Rob |
