Re: Tulip
Nice one Jack. Draws you in. I like the shadow of the stamen inside the blossom but would like to see a bit more of the head in full light since that appears to be your point of focus. The mono treatment here is unexpected and provides a good exercise in managing the full tonal range which you seemed to do pretty well. Did you try any shots with a greater dof?

Re: Tulip
For me, it's the stamen and the shadow so I'd like to see that a little better, cropping off the LHS (tho' I too would prefer a touch more DOF on those petals on the right)

Re: Tulip
Thanks for your comments. I left the petals oof like that because I felt that, in focus they would distract from the focal point, and any more blurred and they'd be annoying and dominating. Mark, I tried cropping the lhs, but found it didn't really make an improvement to my mind.
Thanks for the comments ![]() |

Re: Tulip
This is an almost-but-not-quite for me. I can't say I go a lot on mono flowers but puttithat aside, I think I'd like to see the 'star' at the end of the stamen all in the lit area so that it catches your attention and draws you into the shot more. I am not keen on the shadow cutting the stamen as it is here and with the strength of differential focusing, I can live with the blurred 'framing' ring of the petal edges only if this is balanced by sharp contrast with more detail showing in the petals internally.
Imogen Stubbs is certainly an admirable target to aim for. Her images though outline the flowers really clearly with excellent use of lighting. It is this area that you need to focus on if you want to achieve that sort of shot. Much easier said than done! So keep going, let's see some more and I am sure you'll get better and better as you gain experience. Lighting for mono is something that takes a lot of learning. Cheers, Rob
