Tulip

Bought the wife some flowers the other day.
1. because I’m that kinda bloke.
2. because I love her very much.
3. because I would like a telephoto lens.
4. because it’s had been raining and couldn’t get out to take pics, so thought I’d practice on flowers.
Not necessarily in the correct order….. here is one of them and I promise I did buy a bunch.
The pic was taken landscape with the flower hanging out of the vase horizontally, natural light coming in from the French doors and changed to greyscale in PS.

It's good - but just to hoist you on your own petard - it lacks a bit of punch. If you can get that background down to a good deep black but preserve the detail in the tulip it would be much better. I'm sure it can be done it just needs a bit of work.

I am not sure about this one as it looks like the tulip head is partly in shadow in an area that should not be. I like the idea of clean lines, the black background and prominent tulip being almost free in space but the shadow is unnatural and distracts from the overall image.

If you can re-shoot with better, more even lighting I think it would then be a great subject but again as CT has pointed out, it is also lacking a bit of punch. Correcting that though is easy to achieve once you are happy with the starting picture.

I would try again on this shot as I feel there is a stunning picture in there somewhere.

Actually if you think back a few weeks Matt shot a thistle in a similar style using natural light and a black background. Have another look at that shot for inspiration, it was posted on the forums and from the large print I have seen of it, it is stunning.

Luckily I had already read Ken's reply so understand the reasons for this shot.

I think it is his age and all these new powers that have recently been bestowed upon him. It is easy for him to become confused
