Two girls

Posting this one here as I'd really like your thoughts on it. As it's my first real go at people photography I made a mistake in as much I left the camera in TV mode rather than having it in AV mode so I've blured the back ground and croped out the unwanted clutter.

One of many shots taken from this years Goodwood revival

Exif details
Camera. Canon 30D, Lens. Sigma 70-200mm, ISO 400, f14, focal length 146mm, no flash.

All C&C'S most welcome good or bad. Thank you for taking the time to look.

Re: Two girls

It's a lovely shot davey, of two very personable girls. You've caught their mood and relationship perfectly (the holding hands is excellent) and the colour is great. Now the downside - only one, the blurring is very obvious around the outline of the girls and is not a natural effect. I'd be interested why you felt you needed to do it. Also maybe a graduated blurring from back to front or make it look deliberate by creating a vignette?

Edit - after looking again the vignette isn't a good idea unless it's a crop and you have a full image to work on.

Re: Two girls

Took the liberty of doing a modification. hope you don't mind!

Cropped in closer as I thought there was too much grass at top and black at bottom (and skirts showed evidence of your blur). Cloned out the brighter bits of railing, dodged a little in their faces, sharpened.

BTW, how did it go with getting candids? Seemed to get this one well enough!

In retrospect think I should've taken more off LHS/bottom.

Re: Two girls

I put the blur on as I thought it would make the veiwer look more at the girls than the background.

I have to admit I felt quite nervous to start off with but when I saw these two lovely ladies I poked my lens at them and they were more than happy to pull a couple of poses for me.

I like your edit and I see what you mean about there being to much grass.

Many thanks for your comments.

Re: Two girls

The dodged faces looks much better, Markulous but the halos where the blur ends is still too evidently shopped.

Yeah! I often find better results if instead of selecting along the edge of object, come out into BG. Then feather the approx distance out. Whilst you get some original BG left, it does leave the edges OK. Obviously only works if blur is not too great!
