Re: "untitled" Coat
I'd rather see the whole person in their setting to be honest - there's not enough to hold my interest and the coat looks too modern to be modernist.. if that makes sense

Re: "untitled" Coat
Boooo!
![]() Fair enough, but I don't agree, I think the lighting and range of tones should be sufficient to tickle your fancy (edit: but, as always, and some seasoned filmers will understand, it looks better in print). It was modernist style, and had it been the whole person, unless I'd completely changed the pic, then it would not have met the brief... |

Re: "untitled" Coat
I disagree; there are many modernist photographs that are straight portraits/populated scenes. This looks more 80s to me

Re: "untitled" Coat
I'm not sure you could call it strictly modernist then, unless there is an impressionistic element added to a "standard" shot....
Mordernist photography came about partially as a rebellion to pictorialism and the stigmatism of photography as a non-artistic and 'outside' medium. Sharp focus and leading patterns and lines without obvious focal points or meanings were intrinsic to early and mid-period modernist photography, and this is what I have tried to recreate in this image. It's about tones and shapes, not story and background. Hope you see where I'm coming from even if you don't agree

Re: "untitled" Coat
hmmmmmmm nope sorry Jack, IMO this is not one of your better shots, i can see where u are going with the light and dark and the ines and patterns, but it looks just what it is... a shot of hte middle of a womans coat....... maybe going in closer and losing the obviousness of it.?

Re: "untitled" Coat
Well Jack, I'm going to disagree with the other two, I think this image works just fine. I don't see it as modernist or whatever, but frankly that's because I hate pigeon-holing things into a specific genre. However, this is a semi-abstract shot in that it is a picture based on patterns and lines but is clearly identifiable at the same time. The whole person would be a perfectly good picture but an entirely different one to what i believe jack is trying to achieve here.
i wouldn't put this on my wall but i know people who would. cheers, Rob

Re: "untitled" Coat
I love herringbone and if my waist was that thin... I'd hang it on the wall! I like the picture and it does make me think. I keep wondering what kind of hat she is wearing, if at all. I don't know why.
