| Photo Critique Discuss Water...Tried again with a better setup this time, dropping down onto a surface of water. This has been my favourite ... |

Re: Water
The actual shot is superb, it's pin sharp where it needs to be and is a dynamic shot in its form. I think the colours, whilst attractive or a bit OTT and illogical for the form itself. If the colours were in a radiating circular form I could see them working better but stripes across this effectively circular image (seen from above) don't quite work for my eye.
Add the colour by all means, it is effective to do that, but I think less is more so opt for just a couple of colours that complement each other and let the image do the rest of the work. Will be interested to see more Jack ![]() Cheers, Rob

Re: Water
terrific shot Jack, as Rob says its pin sharp where it needs to be, i have to say that i would probably prefer shades of the same colour rather than lots of different ones,.

Re: Water
All I would change is the background..try it in Black and it will make the colors POP so much more.
really great the way you captured the water that way. |

Re: Water
As already said Jack, this is pin sharp, but the colours from side to side don't work for me, If you can get a couple in horizontally that would work well. Agree about the black background as well, it would really pop then.

Re: Water
What about this one. Can't put in a black bg cos the reflection in the glass would be too hard to work around, but might reshoot later with one
Went for tonage of a single colour as suggested: ![]() |

Re: Water
To make it black all you have to do is use the Magic Wand Tool in Photoshop, and select the white background, now make sure that black is set as your Background Color, hit Control+Delete (that will Fill the background with black) and there you have it.... a black background. It will make it look like this. ![]() Last edited by j sotelo : 04-01-2008 at 03:39. Reason: added image |

Re: Water
I love the new colours, they work far better. The black BG is as good as the white if not better but only with those bright colours which I am not keen on anyway. I don't think it works quite as well with the blue tones which are more muted.
I definitely like the crops and for one moment I couldn't understand why I preferred the one that was illogical in terms of photographic composition. The one with the main lift to the left and the droplet to the right should be best but it isn't. Then I realised why: in the one with more of the water on the left, there is more sharp detail which I think is important. Having said that, I think Mark has used the 'find edges' filter on the latter which brings out the detail more. That filter works great providing you don't go up close. For a picture on the wall it is fabulous and just sharpens the image up beautifully. Very nice image to start with and we are seeing the variations and possibilities available for 'playing' so this is great. I'll be checking this thread regularly and any others you put this type into just to see what you come up ![]() Cheers, Rob |

Re: Water
Jack, the second shot is much better, the white background gives a crisp sharp feel to it, that suits the water and the colours work much better. The black background works well too, that would be easy to do in shot, just taping up black card next time. I'm going to have a go at some of these.
