Water Wheel, Savannah, GA

I took this at f/20 and 1/40th to catch motion of the wheel. Since the cam was handheld, I think the bg is a tad blurred as well, but I will accept that.

Skip, did you select f20 and 1/40th before you took the shot? If your objective was to show motion in the wheel, then the bg would have to be sharp to show the blurred wheel against it. Here the wheel blur is lost in the bg blur.
At f20, you certainly had room to move to a faster aperture and still retain enough DOF to keep the expanse of wall in focus. Or use a ND filter or CP to slow things down. I'm guessing that the bright sky in the TRH corner fooled the cam into a faster shutter than it would have had you cropped it out of the frame.
Of course, in hindsight, we all know the answer is a tripod.
Bottom line - nice try but no cigar on this one.

Re: Water Wheel, Savannah, GA

Hi all...thanks for your comments.

Paul, I suspect that the reason for the bg blur is the slow shutter with a focal length of nearly 60mm. Just too much shake without VR. And of course, my tripod was in the car!!!

I do have the color image, and will post it in my gallery.

I took a look at the color picture in your gallery. I like both of them equal. I know the problem of not having your tripod with you as I haven't gotten one yet and wished many times I had one with me.
