Waterfall
![]() Went for a walk at the weekend, weather was variable everything from rain to bright sunshine to hail. All that rain we've been having had turned the small waterfalls into quite impressive falls. I was balanced precariously on a rock in the stream here so camera shake at slow shutter speeds was even more of an issue that usual The white behind the tree is a cloud but the white over the waterfall is actually spray blown up by the wind. Click for a bigger image, all C&C welcome. cheers Dan

Re: Waterfall
Very good pic, Dan.
You captured the feeling of the rushing water very well. And it is a good sharp image even with all the impediments. I can't think of anything I would do to improve it. Well done. skip |

Re: Waterfall
Beautiful photo, really like the choice of shutter speed and composition, the only thing i can fault is the sky, it is a little bit blown and thus distracting. I understand using the setting you had to, to get the water right, there's little you can do about the sky, but i reckon you can tone it down a bit in post pretty easily...

Re: Waterfall
I wasn't sure how great the impact was until I looked at the bigger version and that has a lot more impact so great shot. The sky is fine, just could do with a bit of darkening down but all the detail is there. I am a bit surprised that your details say this was shot at 1/9th of a second Dan as that seems quite fast to have got this level of blurring. It looks closer to about 0.4 seconds but it all depends on the speed of the water and you say it was coming down a lot faster than normal so I can see how it would work.
I see you got down to f22. I assume you settled for that and didn't use an ND filter at all. I think the rocks could have just a bit more contrast but that's me being picky. Lovely shot, way to go ![]()

Re: Waterfall
Thanks for your comments guys.
Rob, yes it was flowing fast, didn't have any filters with me (nearly didn't take my camera) else I might have stuck one on, if I'd had my 5d with me I'd have tried ISO 50 but I only had the 20d. Cheers Dan |

Re: Waterfall
Dan, next time you are going out with your 5D, could you tell me when and where please? Have it slung casually over your shoulder, just after dark should do it. I'll be the one in a balaclave you see running away with you shouting after me 'Oy you, bring back my camera!...'
Well, ok, I'll give you £50 for it then, how's that? ![]() |

Re: Waterfall
Rob, to be honest if you've got a 20d or a 30d you're not missing much. There are a few occasions when the improved noise to signal ratio, better control of DoF or wider angle of view are useful but there's really not a lot more advantage.
If I get mugged in some dark alley, I've got 2,014 witnesses that you it was you .If I ever put it on eBay I'll let you know and you can bid £50.00 for it, never know you might get lucky! cheers Dan |

Re: Waterfall
I hear you Dan and thanks for trying to make me feel better <g> I do have a 20D (just couldn't find enough in the 30D to warrant the upgrade) and am delighted with what it can produce. I must say I am still harbouring hope against hope that the 40D might go full frame to really steal a march against the D200.
If it is and they can get it out at just below the grand mark, it will absolutely fly off the shelves faster than any DSLR to date in my opinion. Oh well, can but dream ![]() Cheers, Rob |

Re: Waterfall
Lovely shot, the blurring in the water is just enough. The detail in the large version is very good.

Re: Waterfall
David and Whipspeed, thanks for your comments.
Rob 20d's a great camera, if I knew then what I knew now I'd have bought another of those instead of the 5d, there's really not the best part of a £1000's difference in what you get. cheers Dan |

Re: Waterfall
Great shot for handheld - even better that you didn't fall in!
![]() I might've preferred slightly less sky at the top and more 'fall at the bottom, but a minor niggle. Just gave it a bit of a kick: ![]() Dodge all over (maybe a bit too patchy on the rocks now). Darkened sky a touch |

Re: Waterfall
Interesting pimp Markulous. Nothing like what was actually there now as it was an overcast grey day and I caught the only bit of blue sky going. But thanks for having a go, and thanks for the comments.
Sadly to get moe fall at the bottom I would have had to sit on the rock I was perching on and would have had a very wet behind. There's a limit to how much I'll suffer for photography .cheers Dan |
