Westminster Station

First picture I have posted... please be gentle.

Canon 350D with tripod, mirror lockup and shutter release
5secs F22
ISO 100
18mm

The platform was empty, but an Underground employee made me stop taking photos for health and safety reasons??? Managed to rattle a couple off before having to move on

Looking forward to your comments

Re: Westminster Station

Great idea! Think there's maybe too much blur as I'd like to see a little more detail of the train. Be tempted to angle up a little more as that's a big patch of floor and the ceiling might have more interesting detail. Having said that, do think the image works as is!

In theory, you should/could get a pass to take photos and I'm guessing the health and safety issue is because you might trip up one of those multitude of passengers! LOL!

Re: Westminster Station

Hey, Mouldy - If I had a penny for every time I'd been through or stood on this platform, I'd have a D200! Have you been to and from the Jubilee line platform? It's like walking thriugh a giant spacecraft. At least it seems that way to me if I've been for a drink!!!!

Great idea, but I'd agree with the other comments. If you had not titled it, most people would not have known what is was, even though there is a clue with the London Underground logo on the pillar. That is not necessarily a requirement, as it works well as an abstract.

I'd think about cropping 1-2 tiles from the bottom.

The H&S thing is really aimed at the tourists who insist on photographing trains as they pull into the stations. It can affect the driver's vision, even for a second, and if there are a number of cameras maybe for longer. If I fell in front of a train, i'd like the driver to be able to see me at the earliest possible moment!

Re: Westminster Station

Thanks for the positive comments people, much appreciated. I have taken others piccies where there is less blur on the train, I personally preferred this one as I really wanted an illusion of speed. I do take the points about the dead space at the bottom of the photo... I wasnt sure whether to crop the image or not... Marks solution of including more of the ceiling could have worked well. I'm away for a couple of days, but when I get back I'll crop and see what I can do

This is my first post, so thank you for being so nice I will post another when I return home!!!

Re: Westminster Station

Mouldy, a little adage that is worth keeping in mind when taking a picture: 'Show, don't tell.'

If you had taken a picture of the train moving through with a shutter speed of 1 or 2 seconds, we would have still seen the speed factor whilst also seeing a bit of detail to contextualise it. The minds eye would see it as a speeding train, even with relatively little blur. We should show what we need to convey an image to the mind of our viewer and that is what the great photographers of the ages have been so brilliant at and what makes some stand out above others. It is actually a subtlety that lets the viewer do some of the work himself so that he feels he is seeing something in his own mind, rather than simply seeing what you told him to see.

I am probably not explaining this very well but it is a principle that I admire greatly when I see the pictures of the greats like Ansel Adams, Henri Cartier-Bresson and so forth.

Cheers,
Rob

Re: Westminster Station

Great minds think the same. My first thought was to slow the shutter a bit so that we could tell what that blur is. Other than that, I really like the image.
