White Orchids

I took this photo last February at an annual Orchid show. Not my first time posting it on pixalo but I decided I wanted to post it in here, because I am considering getting a somewhat expensive glass print of it made to enter into their competition in February...

fire away, be brutal. if it's junk I don't want to enter it.. (of course, I like it a lot...)

Re: White Orchids

Loyd, The image shows off the colorful parts of the flower quite well.

To me, it appears that the whites are blown lot - no details/structure of the white parts of the flower. For printing, I would make sure that the color parts of the flower are sharpened (they appear to be a bit soft on my screen), and I would clone out a couple of spots on the white part of the lower flower.

Re: White Orchids

Loyd, I agree with John on what he wrote. Also I look at the composition and the whole centre of the image is just blank white, nothing there and the top flower is cut off at the top. Sorry to be brutal but you did ask.
Colin.

Re: White Orchids

I think I need to pull back the saturation on the center of the flowers, but what about the white areas? I bumped that up so it wasn't just headspace and shows the texture of the flowers.. If I can get that satisfactory this work in progress is that much better.

I don't mind the top flower being cut off.. but I could make this a 1X1 aspect and just use the bottom flower.. but then I lose some of the interesting textures.

once again, thanks for your time..

Re: White Orchids

Loyd, I now see where you are coming from and the composition works well, before it just looked as if there was nothing there. But I think that the petals of the orchids don't look quite right, are they really a grey grainy colour?

Re: White Orchids

there's a ton of pores on the leaves.. I used a flash - very modified to mute the bomb blast effect.. maybe tone it down half way between #1 and #2?

Re: White Orchids

A possible blend of the two images may work.

Is it possible to re-shoot and move the position of the flash so that you don't get the reflections of petal pores? Maybe a polarizing filter to cut some of the pore reflections.

Re: White Orchids

not possible to reshoot. this image is 8 months old from an orchid show. I'm crazy but not crazy enough to try growing orchids.

I'll blend the two images. give the grainy one 25% opacity over the pure white.

the original image took first place in my county fair competition and there were 20 entries - a couple I thought might be better than mine.. so I'm confident in the image. Just want to make look awesome on glass..

Re: White Orchids

blended the darker one about 35% opacity over the pure white.. I'm at a loss as to which one I like better. the pure milky white one or the one with texture..

Re: White Orchids

Lloyd, I would go with which version you like best - in the end, after the competition, you are the one that gets to look at it in your home. I like the last and the first images the best.

One other suggestion, try a surface blur (or negative amount of clarity in Photoshop) on the petals to reduce the sparkle/graininess (and then adjust the opacity of the layer). Good masking technique will be needed to make this approach look natural.
