Here is another effort with a remotely fired off-camera flash. Set the speedlight on the landing at the top of the stairs with a diffuser aimed at the wall.

Think it needs a subject present in the atmosphere you've created - but the setting works well enough

I thought that the shadow at the top resembles a person in a hat, and makes you think eek whats up those stairs.

I thought it was a person in a hat at first glance!

I like the image, it has an eeriness about it. It would definitely work well with other subject s thrown into shadow (I am thinking a cat - if you can a cooperative one!)?

I would definitely prefer there to be the shadow of a person up there, it would make this much more pwoerful though i already like what I see. If there is a man up there right now then he's a cybermen and THAT is very scary!
