Your thoughts please.....
Ok I.m going to stick this one in here.
Now I was just out looking to test a 16-35L but found it difficult to find a decent shot. I got this one and at the time I thought this was the right angle etc......a ND Grad filter was used (I think Hard one)......as can be seen the filter had to come over some of the trees at the edges of the frame. So how would you have taken it........was there as shot there in the fist place? ![]() |

Re: Your thoughts please.....
Tricky one this, but I have a go…
You were out to test the wide angle and that’s fine however I think due to the position of this shot and the way the horizon separates the photo almost dead in the center and the dam in the center vertically you have cut the result into four quarters. If you had moved along the waters edge there is another small section of land that juts out and if you had positioned yourself there I think you would have been able to get a better shot compositionally. You would have been ahead of the tall tree on the right hand side so could have raised the horizon and not worried about cutting the top of the tree off, you would have been closer to the purple heather and that would have allowed it to become a stronger element and could have positioned the central dam flow slightly to either side while you would still have had the banking (with the rock details) water as lead in lines to aid your composition. You could have still shot the photo at 16mm but the content would have been different. With regards to the hard edge grad filter, your problem is one that we all face with filters, a little dodging and burning in PS afterwards can virtually remove the unwanted effects of it making the trees at the side darker, this is far easier to ‘fix’ than a blown out sky ![]() One last note… don’t you just know that Dave will come along and turn this into a great black and white, with a sky like that and great foreground detail it’s a ideal candidate ![]() |

Re: Your thoughts please.....
I like the frames
Actually you have done a good job with both, however I still stand by my statement of why this shot is only good and not great I am sure P-E won't mind me saying that as he had the same initial feeling about it too. |

Re: Your thoughts please.....
I join Steve in his comments - when I first saw the image come up it seemed to have a "fish-eye" look about it. There seemed to be a line leading you in to the middle of the sky and this felt uncomfortable as you wander around. It may have been a case of getting your feet wet to get the angle. I like the look of the first of the BWs. I had the same comments about a shot of a Fen dyke - if i has the angle I would not have had the reflection of the sky - you can't win!
