Action Stations
Still working thru processing the pic's I took at the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. As with the first set I posted a few days ago, I still haven't gone past doing the basic adjustments ...
However here's one that really needs attention ![]() ![]() I had a quick go with straightening the verticals, which are not converging, but they are doing 'the splits'! Anyway, I gave up ... I've never bothered about correcting verticals before, but I s'pose I'd better learn, if I'm going to make good use of the Sigma 10-20 ![]() So, help yourselves, and please explain what you do, if you manage to get it straightened up, many thanks ![]()

Re: Action Stations
charlotte. im to tired to do it but..........
select all ctrl and T for transform hold down the ctrl key and drag the middle point to the bottom middle keep the ctrl key down and you can move each corner. try pulling out the top and bottom individually...... then ok it and that should sort your CV's there are other ways of doing it but thats how i do it normally. sometimes u need to use distort > pinch a little ust to stop it looking squat and fat ( pity it doesnt work with humans1lol) fi |

Re: Action Stations
![]() just had a quick go Charlotte, not perfect! i use paint shop pro which has a perspective correction tool. im not sure how you do it in ps but in psp you have a square which you stretch to match your verticals, double click it and it straightens it for you! the only downside to this is the picture ends up getting automatically cropped by the process so you can lose important bits of your pic.(i couldnt help playing with it a bit too lol) |

Re: Action Stations
Aahh, thanks Fiona, I didn't try the middle point, I was doing the top corners + sides, but couldn't get the sides to align properly, + in particular the boat mast. Will give it another go, following your instructions, cheers for that

Re: Action Stations
Another quick go using the horizontal and vertical perspective correction tools in an old version of Paint Shop Pro 'cos I'm on the Linux machine right now and that won't run the later versions. (Pause for breath.....) The trouble is that the corrections create large wedges at the edges (that rhymes
) which need cropping out (unless you have a trapezoidal picture frame) so quite a bit is lost.![]() |

Re: Action Stations
Thanks Ken, MBS + silkstone
Nice conversion MBS. The double-click trick didn't work for me (using PhotoPlus), that would've been too easy! Good job silkstone, you managed to get the ramp straight too. Had another go myself + getting the hang of it, but I can see I'm gonna have to play with the straightening (warp) tool some ... |

Re: Action Stations
![]() Hi Charlotte, just done a quicky on this and took 30 seconds with DCE tools using Perspective. Its an Adobe compatible Plug-in and costs about £18. One nice point on this plug-in is that the picture you are "Perspecting" has a grid of squares superimposed on it and the added bonus is the points can be taken outside of the original picture,it also has a live preview. As the other post has mentioned you loose the sides of the picture but yours had plenty of "spare" to crop .You can download a free trial, just go to Google and type DCE Tools..![]() Regards Brian P.S just gave a bit of Gamma adjustment as well to bring up the water reflections a bit Last edited by brian wright22 : 04-09-2007 at 17:59. Re: Action Stations
Had a look at DCE Tools, + it looks quite good, Brian ... except look at the jaggies it left on the LH edge of your pimp
![]() Had a good look at all your pimps here - thank you all very much - and they've all lost quite a bit of detail quality. Is this a direct result of correcting the perspective, or is it to do with downloading, editing + re-uploading the image, or maybe a combination of the two, d'you think? Not much point in correcting verticals only to end up with a once-sharp image being not-so-sharp anymore I should take more care to align verticals at the time of shooting, methinks ![]() |

Re: Action Stations
Mainly down to people playing with small image Charlotte, although expect to lose some detial near edges when correcting perspective on a large scale.
As for aligning verticals at shoot time, when at 10mm you're going to struggle if you end up pointing the lens up or down from the horizontal . I've quite often been on tip toe trying to get the camera level for a shot so the verticals don't converge too much ![]() |

Re: Action Stations
And, on 2nd thoughts, it's often necessary to tilt the camera to get the comp you want anyway. Better get used to converging verticals *sigh*

Re: Action Stations
There isn't much loss of quality provided the correction isn't too severe. I've just processed a load of shots taken at an exhibition yesterday, where I couldn't hold the camera level and get everything in (my excuse
) and the final IQ is OK even for those taken at ISO 1600. It's better to do the corrections on the original RAW (I use BIbble + Percy Pro plugin, which is neat) or a 16-bit TIFF. Doing it with a small JPEG is likely to lose something. |

PS To line up the verticals at the time of shooting Charlotte you had better take a "cherry Picker" hoist with you!!.or some very long stilts.I jest. Regards Brian Last edited by brian wright22 : 06-09-2007 at 09:21. |
