Bit of advice please

OK...

Here's the scam, just bought a Canon EOS 20D.

I have been using Photoshop CS2 prior to this for some time now. Is there a way of opening a RAW file in Photoshop directly. Reading an article in the Canon EOS users mag there is a plug-in, but it costs £400 or so. Can anybody reccommend this or is there another suggestion someone can make?

Cheers

Hi Chris, I'm not aure I understand here. I have the 20D and I just open CS2, open the RAW file and it is displayed in the RAW converter window. No problem. Have you tried it yourself.

regards

Warspite is right, I'd forgotten about that plugin which I installed months ago.

Hi Chris, I am sorry it has taken me so long to reply to this but I wondered if you got it working in the end? Adobe has released the latest version of the RAW file plugin as a free download, once installed it should allow you to automatically open the Canon 20D raw files into Photoshop.

Here is a link to both the Windows and Mac versions to help you out

Adobe Photoshop - Digital camera raw file support

that's a slightly different issue. that's down to nikon (stupidly imo) encrypting the white balance part of the NEF file in the D50. It means that there are very few programs available that properly supports D50 NEF files. The reason for that is developers have to jump through hoops to get access to the Nikon NEF API. Little prole dudes like me have no chance what so ever of getting near it...

The Adobe Camera Raw handles the files slightly differently from the nikon plugin. One thing I noticed is ignores all the camera settings at the time of shooting (e.g. saturation, sharpening etc) and does it's own thing. The effect of this is the image you see on the LCD (or PictureProject) bears absolutely no relation to what you get with Adobe Camera Raw.

Spent many a day trying to figure that one out.

You can use your Nikon PS plugin which is buried on the CD that came with the camera. Just search the CD for "Nikon NEF Plugin.8Bi". When u find it, dump it in: -
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS2\Plug-Ins\File Formats\
Assuming a default install.

I've recently just switched back to the nikon plugin because it's much faster

Re: Bit of advice please

Very useful information indeed. I have learned something new today and I am sure that the Nikon users will be thankful too.
